Replace Tweeter on B&W 683?

12631 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  petew
I bought a used pair of B&W 683 knowing that the tweeter (top little silver/aluminum cone) on one was pushed in. I have contacted local B&W dealer and they can give me a replacement part of $70.00. I would love to be able to pop it back out without paying anything. Any suggestions on this?

But if I can not pop it back out, has anyone ever replaced a speaker on this speaker? I am interested in knowing what is the best/proper way to accomplish this task? Instructions or diagrams would be very helpful.

Congratulations on the B&W's. Looks like you are going to be ~$70 lighter in the wallet. Since you are going through a dealer see if they will put the new one in for you. Those tweeters are fragile.
Since you are probably going to have to replace it anyway, you can go ahead and try popping it back out with a vacuum cleaner.

Post some pictures. A picture can be really helpful
I have done this. It's very simple.

1. Unscrew the mid driver.

2. Pop up four rubber plugs from the upper grill mounting sockets.

3. There are four more screws under the plugs. Unscrew them and the upper part of the front plastic cover will come out.

4. Now you have the access to the twitter. Replace it and assemble everything back in reverse order.

It's a 10 minute job. All you need is a proper screwdriver.

You are actually getting out cheaper than I thought you would. A replacement woofer for my athena bookshelf speakers are about.$40. I figured b&w would charge a huge premium for a replacement part.

On the 683 there are four holes (look like screw holes recessed) in each of the four corner. Is that where i take off the front of the speaker?

I believe I follow the rest of your instructions. I will take some pics of before, during and after, in case someone has same issue. Thanks for your help. It is going to take 3-5 business days to get the part.

Thanks,
I'm very sorry. I though you were talking about B&W 603. My mistake...

From the picture of 683 it looks like you can skip the first step of my instructions and just undo the screws in those holes.

That is what I thought. My only concern is that B&W has put some kind of seal/gasket for tighter fit. I don't want to ruin that. I figure someone would have said something about it though.
There is a plastic ring around the FST driver that pops off. Get your finger nails in between the ring and the driver and pull out. I had a client try it with a flat tip screw driver and damaged his FST so do not use tools! Once removed your will find 8 allen screws requiring a 3mm allen key. After getting the FST driver out reach in and you'll feel the nautilus horn, there is a plastic ring at the base (toward the cabinet) once unscrewed then push the tweeter out.

I just replaced my tweeter this morning and it only takes a couple minutes

PM Me your email and I can give you a service manual if you want

Yes

The tweeter came in yesterday and I installed. Pretty simple process. I will post some pictures of the process in case someone runs into the same process.

The hardest parts were lining up the gasket (seal behind speaker that goes flush with cabinet). I found it easiet to put back all the screws with the gasket before putting the speaker back in. This way all the screws lined up with the gasket.

Took about 20 minutes.
yeah replacement diaphragms ( not the tweeter, just the diaphragm ) on my 1" beyma bullet tweeters were $80 and thats just for a few grams of aluminum

AND ! when i got them one of them was pushed in already right out of the box ! ! !

but i only needed 1 anyway, they simply came in pairs.
Anyone still have a manual or instructions for the 683? Images were never posted to help in replacement....
