Upgrading from Chroma 5/Calman. For Pioneer Kuro Pro-101

Now that the Chroma 5 is obsolete, I am wondering if it would be outperformed by newer (and cheaper) hardware.

What is the point of diminishing returns at the moment? Can I get away with buying a Colormunki + free HCFR, and get satisfying grayscale on my Kuro 101?

side note: I have mostly just been using simple RGB levels to alternately measure windowed grey test patterns of 30 and 90%. It takes several attempts over a few days before I can finally nail it. I now realize that more expensive hardware doesn't necessarily equal easier calibration.
