Replacement HDD Tray and Screws from Sony

I Recently upgraded my HDD on my PS3. I was able to get the blue screw off without any problems, but did strip one of the small screws on the tray. I was able to get it off and swap the HDD though. I called Sony 1-800-345-SONY and talked to representative who agreed to send me a new Tray and screws. I didn't think they would actually come in, but I received the replacement last week. Now if I decide to upgrade to a larger drive in the future, all I have to do is take out the current drive (in the tray) and just replace it with the larger HDD in the new tray. I suggest you call sony if you have stripped the screws and request a replacement tray and screws.

^^^ That's good to hear, I was seriously considering pulling the trigger on a 250 GB upgrade.

I've heard/read that those screws are quite "soft", what kind of shape was the infamous blue screw in, once you were able to remove it that is? Did it cost you to have the replacements sent, any shipping charges?
For me, the blue screw was not a problem. I was able to find a Philips Screwdriver that matched up perfectly with the blue screw. Just take your time, hold it firmly and slowly turn the screw. The small screws that hold the HDD to the tray was a different story. I was able to get 3 of the four out without a problem. Of course, the last screw was the hardest. I stripped it a bit, but was able to get it off. When I put it back together with my new HDD, I made sure I didn't tighten the screws too much.

Sony shipped me the replacement tray, four screws, and blue screw. I did not have to pay anything for it. I just called, gave them my ps3's info and a few weeks later I received the replacement.

I would recommend you getting an external HDD so that you can backup your current PS3 hdd to. That way you will not lose anything. Backup for me took about 40 minutes. swapped out the drives and did a restore on the new drive and had everything there that I had before, only difference was the larger disk size.

If you take your time with the screws, you can have the HDD's swapped out in less than 20 minutes. The longest was waiting for the PS3 to backup the HDD to the External HDD.

niembre,

Regarding the external drive you used to back up your PS3... Does it have to be in a certain format?

I only have 1 external drive and it has stuff already saved on it... I'm not sure I would be able to use it to back up the PS3....

So long as it's a FAT32 format. The PS3 will create a folder on it, and place the backup image in that folder. Provided there is enough space to do so. I back up my PC and my PS3 on the Same WD passport with no problems.

FAT32
Yeah, it has to be FAT32 or your PS3 will not recognize it.
I dunno, I just upgraded my HDD to 160GB this afternoon, and it seems to be going great for it. I just dunno if it'll recognize the old drive as an external drive, tho, since I recycled the old one with an external enclosure, which I hooked up via USB. Wonder how to get the PS3 to recognize its old drive in that way.

Is there really a file size limit of 4GB for FAT32?? I was hoping to use an external HD for ripped DVDs but if this is the case that wont work.

Anyone using their external for this?

Weird, if it has to be FAT32, then why does my PS3 recognize all 160GB (149GB) of my HDD?

On top of that, the old 40GB HDD that was in there formatted very nicely to NTFS as my external "media drive."

If true, from what I read it is a file size limitation not a drive or partition size limit
