howdie all, hows everyone doing? ok so i had my onkyo s790 for about a year now and im going to sell it to my friend and get a new system that has the auto calibration and goodies, now, i want it to be a full package like my s790, meaning it comes with a reciever and speakers.

i took a look at the SR606 and i was hooked to buy it right away up until i relized it doesnt come with speakers, i was hooked on the sr606 specially because it supports TRUEHD and has the audyssey auto calibration, so ya, which system can i buy that comes with speakers and supports TRUEHD and auto calibration? btw i want it to be an onkyo because he i really liked them so far so why not, besides they give the most bang for the buck, right?

You can get the Onkyo HT-SP908, which uses the SR605 receiver. It has the Audyssey calibration system and TrueHD, etc., support.

Right now no Onkyo HTIB has the 606 receiver. However, beyond a few things like extra HDMI inputs, I don't see a huge difference between it and the older 605.

If you really want the 606, you'll have to buy separate speakers.

oh boy that system costs 1000$, i want a system that costs around 400-500$ Tops. scratch the 606 off the list, what other system can i get that has TRUE HD and costs around 400-500 and that is surely to sound better than my ONKYO S790?

For that budget, I honestly don't know. Maybe some of the Sonys or a refurb somewhere, but definitely not any new Onkyo. TrueHD capable receivers/systems are really going to eat up your budget. Keep in mind the 606 receiver alone is $600 new. Maybe a refurb 605 with a cheap speaker package. That'd be the cheapest thing I can think of that'll do TrueHD, but you'd be shopping around.

ok so lets put it this way, which new Onkyo reciever with speakers can i get that DOESNT have TRUEHD , however has DOLBY D EX just like my current S790? oh and will it sound better than my s790 or not by much? btw if i was to sell only the S790 reciever and keep the S790's speakers, and buy the awesome SR606 reciever , will the sr606 work good with my s790 speakers?

The S790's replacement, the HT-SR800, has Dolby D EX. It's basically the 790 with slightly different speakers and sub, Audyssey added, and two HDMI (video switching only) inputs. I don't think there'll be much of a difference in sound, if any. The speakers are different, but not THAT different.

Or you could get the 606 and use the 790s speakers. They'll work just fine.

but i WILL notice a good difference in sound if buy the sr606 and use it with the s790's speakers right? oh and btw, if i do deicde to just buy a reciever and use my S790's speakers, the best bang for the buck for me will be the SR606 right? theres no other/better reciever in that price range yea?(i cant get it for 385$ from amazon or 430$ from circuit city)

You are waisting time (and money) replacing a decent Onkyo receiver with a better one and keeping crappy speakers expecting some SQ improvement.

This is just my humble opinion, but an honest and true one.

If you old system was already set up and calibrated correctly, you should expect exactly the same sound just more features on the receiver.

ok i decided that i might actually buy the reciver only and not a complete system set that comes with speakers, so my question is , which reciever would be my best choice around 400-500$ tops, and i would prefer that it would have DOLBY TRUEHD because i dont want to change a reciever again in a year or 2. i Am going to keep my onkyo s790 speakers and might upgrade the speakers at a later time, thats not very imporant for me, something is a bit messed up with my s790 aswell so thats what triggered me to sell my s790 to begin with, a minor problem but yea. oh and i really dont care about the VIDEO CAPABILITES of the reciever because im only going to use the reciever for audio, i dont need it to convert or upconvert or any of that stuff. i wouldnt mind how many HDMI inputs it has either but atleast 1 would be fine. since im using Optical cables mainly for my system(ps3 and 360 and cable box, MY 360 doesnt have HDMI at all so ya)

Look you can find the 606 for $400 if you look around. Numerous deals have popped up recently that had it at amazon for as low as $371. You can get cheaper 7.1 speakers and call it a day. I think you would be fine if you get the 606 and the onkyo sks-ht540 speakers. I will prob go this route. It will cost you about $650. Others can comment but I am no audiophile and I believe that this is a decent setup for those who wants TRUE HD sound.

thanks for the info , i have a question tho, where would be the best actual store(not online) for me to buy the SR606 (price wise)? i drive a car so distance is not a problem as long as its not too far of course, i live in queens NY, i mean, circuit city is right by my house and i can buy the SR606 without even using a car. but is there some other store that sells it for cheaper than circuit city? they sell it for 439.99$. there is NO way to get circuit city to PRICE MATCH their price of the SR606 with the price of the SR606 on the website: amazon or any other actual retail store right?(such as B&H or J&R)

regarding speaker wire, the best and cheapest place to buy speaker wire is home depot right? and approximatley, how long of a cable should i buy for it to be enough for all the speakers?(thefront 3 speakers and surround speakers barely need a long speaker wire, just the rear surround speakers do because they are the farthest from the reciever behind the couch and the room is quiete big.

If you're in NYC, you might see if J&R or some of those big electronics stores in Manhattan have Onkyos. Otherwise, Circuit City is probably your best bet. They really only pricematch with other B&M stores or their own website, not anything like Amazon.

For speaker wire, get a few feet longer than you think you'll need, just in case. Like, maybe an extra yard or two per speaker. You can always cut it, but reattaching is a chore.

ok man thanks for the info, yes im in New York, Queens. i want to go to J & R in the city but then for sure i need the car, basically they sell it for 399$ which is great and cheaper than CC's price, circuit city sells it for 430$. Do you think circuit city will price match J & R's price or probably not? B & H has the SR606 for $395 aswell but then again b&h is in the city aswell.

whats the chance that circuit city will price match B&H's or J&R's price guys?

because CC is really like a block away from my the buildng where i live so that would be the best way for me.

Short of asking them, I don't know. Some stores only do it for stores a certain distance away (like maybe stores in Queens, but not in the rest of NYC, or whatever.)

So you still might make the block long trip? You still aren't finding out until you ask someone who works there
