My 5040 will no longer work. I can hard reset it, "hold the power button for 10 seconds" but it doesn't clear it up. The power light will come back on and the TV will show snow for about 5 seconds but that's it... No matter how long I wait, it will not respond to any commands on the remote control. I can watch TV passing through the device but the device it self is not working and it's not recording live TV. I tried turing it off for about a minute and that didn't work either.

Ugh! any suggestions? Any secret's I'm missing to get this thing working again?

Thanks, Steve.

Have you unplugged it, waited a few minutes and then plugged it in again?

Yes, I've tried that as well.... Still doesn't work... If I bought it in December, 2002, will they still replace it? I haven't touched the box or done anything else that would have violated the warranty.

Thanks, Steve.

Yours is a tough call. I could be a HD corruption, HD failure or a component failure. You are past the 90 day warranty on labor. I would call SB and see if there is a fixed service charge and what it is.

1) If you have a corrupted OS, paying the service fee is excessive. If you are half way handy you can re-image the drive for nothing and save the bux as well as shipping and turn-around time.

2) If the drive is bad, you could upgrade it yourself, send the old one to the drive mfg for warranty replacement and save the fee, shipping, turnaround and have an upgraded unit.

3) But if it's the motherboard, you're screwed.

I would call SB, maybe they might (doubtful) do it free since it's so close to full warranty. If not, see what the service fee is and throw the dice.
