I just received my first ever pvr...a replaytv 3030. I can't wait to set it up! However, I will be setting up my directv system in a few days and I was wondering if I should wait until then before I power up my replay for the first time. I have cable now and could use it for now, but will it be easy to add all the directv channels after I have already set it up? Should I set up the replay with cable and dss at the same time or should I start having fun now and just hook the directv up to it in a few days? Thanks.

DEFINITELY go ahead and start using your new ReplayTV!

You have your choice - you can tell it you just have cable for now, and just get those listings - OR, you could go ahead and tell it you have DirecTV too (even though you don't yet) and have those channels already in your channel guide, ready and waiting for you to actually HAVE the DirectTV hookup (your DirecTV channels will (most likely) be the ones above 100.

You will probably be hooking up your DirecTV to input 2, using svideo. Feel free to tell it that during setup. Do you know what brand of DirectTV receiver (RCA, Sony ...) you'll have? I'll take a wild guess and say you'll probably have serial control (questions asked during setup).

Feel perfectly free to set up with just your cable channels now, as it is easy to go back later and tell it you have DirectTV once you do - but you will face a longer download after you tell it about the DirecTV.

Good luck. Post your decision, your results, and, go ahead, share your enthusiasm - we understand ... http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Give it a shot! I use the wide-band data port with the adapter on my old RCA DSS receiver and it works fine. I think either port will work, actually...

And the answer to your other question is yes: Replay will give you all the channels that you have access to from your provider, and then let you select which ones you want to remove from your Replay channel lineup.

skleiser, thanks for the warm welcome! I will go ahead and set it up then. guess I was just being paranoid. I have a 3 year old Sony Sat-B2 receiver that has a wide band data port. Can I use that connection with a 9 to 15 pin adapter to connect the satellite to the replay through the serial cable? Yes, I will be connecting the directv to input 2 with s-video. so how will the replay know which directv channels I receive? If I tell the replay I have directv will it add every channel and then let me delete the ones I don't have later? Thanks for the info. I can't wait to get started!!!

jleavens...just to clarify, when you say "Replay will give you all the channels that you have access to from your provider" do you mean that it will recognize all the directv channels (even the one's i don't get) and that I can then just delete those...or will it only see all the channels that I currently receive (pay for) and then I can delete any of those that I don't want listed? My guess is the former...but I just wanted to make sure before I started setting up my replay without the directv connected.

You're right - it's the former. Replay won't know what you actually PAY FOR, just what's available.

You can delete the ones you don't pay for and any others that you just never watch after setup (note: you don't really 'delete' them - they just don't show up and Replay won't record shows from them - you can ALWAYS 'undelete' them and they appear in the Guide instantly)

Thanks a lot guys...I will be setting up my 3030 tonight. Can't wait for football tomorrow. Do any of you hold off watching until the games are well underway before watching so you can jump through commercials? I know I would definitely do that for regular tv shows...but I was wondering how many people do it for live sporting events.

I program football games to be recorded in the best resolution. I pad the end of the game for about 20 minutes, maybe more. I begin watching the game about 45 minutes after kickoff, and I usually catch up to live in about the late 3rd quarter. If I catch up to live, I take a break, check e-mail, etc, and come back to the game when I've accumulated some delay for commercial skipping. I also do alot of instant replays. It's a great way to watch the Vikings. Miss that Randy Moss catch? Replay It!
