I'm looking for a good set without defects. I have gone through 2 sony 40v2500 and am finish with them. How long until we start seeing some new sets? Should I just wait? Other 1080p options?

I just returned my second KDL-40V2500 like you and am waiting patiently for some new technology to blow me away before I buy anything else. I have been reading about how HDTV's are predicted to reach commodity status by 2008 and the prices are expected to plummet further and the PQ get higher still.

In the meantime I am going to buy a cheap LCD to hold me over(Less than $500). The KDL-40V2500 kind of turned me off on the high end LCD's and I will be sick when the OLEDS get here and are cheap as hell some time before 2010.

If you want something soon the new 720p Samsungs will be out in March. The new 1080p's are expected around summer and the new LED lits around 2008.

I don't know about you, but I plan on staying away from Sony in the future.

What makes me mad is the fact that the picture is absolutely stunning. I might just try to find something on sale and wait until the new 1080p samsungs come out. Then again, the last samsungs (4x95 and 4x96) have the same issue as the sony.

I have no idea what I'm going to do. I really don't want to be without a hdtv.

I've read that Hitachi produces the best LCD panel technology available (said to put Samsung and Sony's S-PVA panel in the shade) and now it's incorporated 120 HZ technology. This new set was unveiled at CES last week.

Here's a customer review of the previous Hitachi 37" set, the 37HDL52 with the same panel.

June 2006 Yahoo.com

I always wanted to get a plasma TV for my bedroom. But they are just a bit too big. LCD has the right sizes but not the picture performance. I have scoped the field in the last 7 months and become frustrated with what I had seen until I came across this set. This is probably the best LCD in terms of technology and yet has not gained the popularity it deserves. Its Super-in-plane switching LCD technology is obviously the main reason why it has faster response time, wider viewing angles ( I can see the images parallel to TV almost as well as in front of it.) and solid black levels.

What is becoming more and more annoying is that the data shown on the spec sheet of many so-called popular LCD makers such as Sharp, Samsung, Sony and LG just simply cannot be backed up by what I have seen with my pair of naked eyes. For example, most of these LCD boast a whopping 1000:1 to 4000:1 contrast ratio. In reality, it is not even close. None of these TV sets can display the subtle details in any dark objects such the textures of dark clothing and shadows of trees. All I see is this fuzzy darkness. I am an engineer. This turns me off big time. But this 37" Hitachi LCD has the best grayscale representation, by far.

Hitachi should spend some money advertising to let more people become aware of its superior LCD technology performance. When they do that, they don't have to beef up on the spec sheet, all they need to do is tell people to do a side-by-side comparison. ...

Why don't you try Plasma, I know you said 1080p but it's not a big deal. I went the Sony way myself (XBR2 47 LCD) biggest piece of diarrhea I've spent $4000 on. I returned it and demanded a refund immediately and I went with a Samsung 5053 Plasma.

If you could get past the burn in and IR you'll love Plasma. I'm not going to bs you. there's still issues with Plasma and IR, burn in but if you're careful they go away after a day or two. I picked my Samsung up with the idea that someday LCD will clean up it's act and give you what they charge and not a cloudy, full of issues paper weight and then I'll pick one up but by then the other techs might be out and beat them all..we'll see.
