Cliff , any update on the progress of DVD-Audio for the Revo or is it a stillborn issue? I did buy the Revo from Digital Connection so your reply would be most appreciated.

At this point I would say it is stillborn. Hell they can't even get the 40 bugs fixed in the driver.

Cliff,

Sounds like you are starting to get a little down on the consumer side of M-Audio again. I didn't realize that the card suffered from 40 or so bugs, after reading through the threads there is only one that is holding me back right now, and that is ASIO via SPDIF. What are some of the other bugs? Obviouslly there are still some latency issues, and the control panel feature, but I don't recall seeing anything else that I would consider major.

ASIO over S/PDIF is only the tip of the iceberg. The number 40 are the bugs that can be confirmed.

I’ve always been down on the consumer division (bunch of used car salesman with no knowledge of audio) and the BS rebate trick with CompUSA was the last straw.

If there are so many bugs in the Revo, how come it seems to be a VERY popular choice for HTPC users??? I am very close to picking one up..... but why? Is something else around the corner? Will M-Audio ever fix these issues? What are the issues, and why should I care?

Cliff,

Any chance Digital Connection is going to start carrying sound cards from other makers? I've about decided to go to a set-top box for DVD-A/SACD (Pioneer's all-in-one model), but I've only got one set of analog ins on my receiver, and they're currently connected to my 410. I like doing my sound processing for DVD on the computer, meaning I need to do multi-channel analog passthrough if I'm going to hook up a set-top box. I guess I could do that with a 1010LT, but I'm kind of put of with M-Audio after reading these posts for the last few months. That said, I bought my 410 from DC and would like to make future purchases from you guys (especially after seeing your Revo sell page--sucks that you have to go that route with the rebate thing).

â€I bought the Revo 7.1 from CompUSA to replace my Game Theater XP. What trick? If I'm gonna get gagged I'll take it back. Thanks for your input,â€

Leo,

M Audio controls dealer prices through MAP (minimum advertised price). If a dealer advertises a price less than MAP M Audio cuts them off and will not ship product to a dealer until they return to the MAP.

M Audio violated their own MAP for CompUSA by allowing CompUSA to advertise a Revo price of $65 (MAP=$99) after M Audio provides a $35 manufacturer’s rebate.

This manufacturer’s rebate resulting in an advertised price lower than MAP was a deal with CompUSA to prevent them from canceling a large Revo order because M Audio could not make a promised ship date.

The manufacturer’s rebate was NOT offered to any other dealers and voids M Audio’s ability to enforce MAP. This was a really bad management decision that will lower M Audio’s integrity in the market place.

Not to add further fuel to the fire, but I emailed M-Audio again recently for an update on the DVD-Audio player. Here is the entire thread, including my original email from February....

--------------------------------------------------------

Greetings Brian,

I asked my Product Manager about the current status of a DVD-Audio player. His reply is below.

Best Regards,

Revolution Team

From Revolution Product Manager:

Nothing has changed regarding our stance on DVD-A. The blurb below is still accurate. We've been actively working on it, but we can't control something that we don't develop in-house. That's why we, as a company, never promised DVD-A support to customers.

I'm hoping we can provide it, but that will still take more time and effort.

And we're expending both to try to get there.

Thanks,

*****

Is there any update on the DVD-Audio software? I plan on dumping my Audigy 2 for a Revolution, but won't do it until the DVD-Audio software is released.

Subject: Re: DVD-Audio software?

Greetings,

DVD-Audio Player Application:

The Revolution 7.1 software bundle is already extremely full-featured, with over $200 of retail software included, and M-Audio is actively working toward offering upgraded new features to our users at the minimum cost possible. Currently, no software DVD-Audio player is available on the market. We are actively working with developers of DVD-A player applications to try to accelerate the development process. It is not yet clear whether it is possible to support all of the required CPPM copy protection in software-only, but early information looks promising.

If M-Audio is able to provide a software-only feature upgrade to existing Revolution users, we will attempt to do so at only marginal cost to interested users; just enough to cover the cost of licensing the software from a 3rd party, plus the cost of media and shipping/handling. Users interested in taking advantage of this opportunity should register their Revolution 7.1 card with M-Audio. We will contact registered users when more information is available.

Best Regards,

Revolution - JM

Hello,

I am considering purchasing a Revolution card from Digital Connection. What is the current status of the DVD-Audio playback software that was supposed to be released for this? Is it still going to be free for owners of the Revo or would we be expected to purchase the software separately?

Thanks,

Brian
