Revolution 7.1 SPDIF level adj?

789 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  JKohn
I recently got an HTPC that has a Revolution 7.1 sound board and a MyHD HDTV card. The Revo card's SPDIF digital coax output is hooked to my Denon receiver for decoding. The MyHD's analog output is hooked to the 6 channel input (analog) of the Denon receiver.

I have noticed a drastic difference in the output level of the two. When watching a DVD with sound going through the Revo SPDIF, I have to crank up the volume on the Denon to -8. I've never had to do this before (unless I was looking to crack the drywall)- when I had a dedicated DVD player hooked to the SPDIF the volume requirements was something like -25. The volume required on the MyHD is more in line at -25.

If there is an adjustment on the SPIDF input level on the Revo, I can't find it. On a digital input it doesn't seem to make sense that you would have one. Can anyone tell me what might be happening here? Anyone else noticed this about the Revo?

bump?
I was noticing this also. It would be nice to know what we could do to adjust the output.

Cameron,

What is your setup?
well I am using a REVO in my home office. I use a M-Audio 24/96 for my Home Theater setup. I run the REVO into a Panasonic SC400ht Home theater in a box for my office computer. The system sounds decent, but the REVO digital output signal seems to be attenuated compared to other input sources including my toslink DVD player.

Im curious about this too. Same problem with my setup. Is there a setting that defines max volume in software?
Are you guys using the latest drivers that fix the -6db output? That could be the problem...

I just checked the AC-3 volume levels from Revo and from a Panasonic RP-82 using the test tones on Avia and they were both exactly the same level.

I also tested the S/PDIF output from MyHD and MyHD AC-3 passed over the PCI bus to Revo S/PDIF output and compared to a Samsung SIR T151 STB and again ALL volume levels were the same.

How did you do that? MyHD does not have 6 channel analog output. Are you decoding AC-3 from MyHD to stereo and then processing thru Circle Surround II to get 6 channel analog output from Revo?

As for AC-3 volume levels they are determined at the time a DVD is encoded and are not (can’t) be changed until AC-3 is decoded into PCM in your receiver. You can’t compare AC-3 to PCM volume levels because PCM can be changed in the digital domain.

I'm not sure CameronR. I'll check. Where can I get more info on the problem/fix?

Sorry, my bad. You are exactly right, I am using the 6-channel decoded output from my Revo when listening to the MyHD.

What you are saying makes perfect sense. It didn't make sense that the digital out level would be adjustable. But there is a definate difference in levels on my system when I compare the digital out from the Revo compared to any other digital out from other components.

For DD/DTS passthrough that's just not possible. But if you're talking 2-channel PCM, then it is indeed possible because there is a volume control in the chain. At the risk of stating the obvious, did you check the master volume level (at the bottom of the first page of the control applet). In case you didn't notice, there's a master volume in addition to the channel-level, and when I installed the Revo I noticed the default master volume was quite low, less than 50%.
