REW on a Microsoft Surface

When you do the microsoft sound test, do the chimes come out of all channels properly?

You need to be connected to an avr by hdmi and use the “asio4all” drivers for multichannel rew. Works on my surface pro 3 but can be a little finicky at times

nope... only the L/R

tried with and without the asio4all drivers..

it should "work" to output on hdmi (which i'm using) without the asio4all drivers for playback of movie, youtube, etc... but it doesn't. The AVR "sees" 5.1 channels like I configured through windows, but when i play the test tones via the regular driver or asio4all drivers, I only get output from the L/R channels

super frustrating... I have a surface 6 that i'm going to try tonight to see if it's any different...

REW won't work until windows is working properly. Someone had mentioned they installed a dolby atmos app for win10 that fixed their similar issue.

I have the same issue on an old laptop and could never find a solution but I did not try the dolby app.

funny, i saw that too... and then saw it was something i had to pay for... ugh...

it also mentions headphones and that made me gunshy...

check your computer manufacturer for audio drivers that might include dolby drivers. I would bet OEMs have software/apps that cover the missing driver data.

well, on my surface 6, using the adapter cable to hdmi (vs. usb-c to hdmi on the surface 7), i was able to get 5.1 channels playing sound. I haven't installed the asio4all drivers yet though.

I had similar issue getting REW to work multi-ch on a Surface Go.

Turns out the issue was that not all USB-C to HDMI adapters are the same...the one I had only allowed stereo. I had to get another one that supported multi-ch.

i think i'll head to best buy over lunch and try another...

just to close the loop on this one.

I bought a different USB-C to HDMI adapter, and now all my speaker outputs work.

Moral of the story, they are not all created equal, and if you have issues, try another one...

unfortunately, there wasn't anything on the packaging to indicate one would/wouldn't work "better" than another... in any aspect, not just sound wise...

Does your Surface have an HDMI out or are you using any kind of USB->HDMI adapter? I had issues running REW on my Surface Go because the HDMI adapter I was using was 2ch only. Switched to a better USB-HDMI adapter and now it works correctly.

yep, thanks for the check in. Seemed like a boy type response bumped the thread. Like you, I needed a better quality adapter. Posted my resolution in post 12.
