Hi all,

First of all i must say that i am a complete HTPC novice. I'm new to the forum, and after searching for a while now i have a question i just couldnt find an answer to. What i am trying to do is rip my dvds to my home computer (desktop) using dvd shrink (recommended by a friend) for general playback and eventual streaming. i have no interest in making an actual backup "hard copy" of the dvd to use in one of my players. after reading many tutorials about using dvd shrink i have been able to get the dvd files on my hard drive, but i dont know how to play them with audio. hopefully i am just retarted and its just something simple that i am missing. when i go to the hard drive where the files are stored there is an audio and video folder. so i go into the video folder and select one of the files and it plays, BUT WITH NO AUDIO. man this is frustrating. what am i missing? any direction or insight would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,

J.G.

P.S. i dont have Nero, is this something that i will need to get a copy of.

I have dvd shrink too but I also have Any DVD and in all honesty nothing works better IMO for ripping dvds to your hard drive than Any DVD. Plop in the disc and Any Dvd will scan it and then you just go to dvd rip and that's it. Takes about 10-15 minutes to rip to your HDD. I and use Theatertek, PowerDVD or Vista media center for playback. You can have it remove all of the trailers and crap you don't want so when your ready to watch a movie you just open up the player of choice, click on the folder and then the movie and off you go. retains all of your languages DD, DTS etc. too

1. If you are a complete novice, I'd suggest you download a player called VLC. You may not have the proper audio codecs installed and VLC seems to have most of what you will need to play regular DVD rips.

2. Pay attention to the previous post about AnyDVD you will need that as well.

3. Search for a tutorial online for DVD shrink. I find it easier to rip just the main movie to ISO format (that creates just one icon). Good luck.
thanks for the quick reply scooter. after my initial post i was fiddling around with another dvd some more and i clicked on the Video TS folder-->then VTS_01_1-->a power dvd file. this time it starts up with sound but it appears the movie is broken up into 5 parts. do you know if there is any way to have this all as one file so i dont have to get up and click a different file 4 seperate times throughout the film? would it also be ok to delete the AUDIO_TS folder and then rename the VIDEO _TS folder to the movie name to keep my storage drive a little more "organized"? i think i am close to my goal of being able to load all my dvd's onto my computer and being able to watch through medial center. if i can't get to the point where i can just select one file and play the whole movie i will have to try the Any DVD, it sounds a bit easier than DVD Shrink.

thanks for the input red.

i found a couple good tutorials, i just want to clarify one thing. do you select the ISO image file in the 'select backup target' window? (i have just been selecting hard disk folder) this is after i have clicked backup. if i do this will i still be able to play normally through powerdvd, divx, etc.? i have also gone in to the preferences and deselected the option that says it breaks the movie up into several files. i'm trying a new movie now, hopfully its all one icon when i'm done.

(side note) Keep in mind, i dont have nero. is that needed for the ISO file to play.
