Robert Heron, HD guru, previously of DL.TV and PC Mag, now co-host of the new Revision3 show "HD Nation", just gave his pick for the best Bluray player on the market:

The LG BD390

Great show, btw. He co-hosts with Patrick Norton from Tekzilla (they used to host DL.TV together). They also were guests on the most recent Engadget HD podcast.

Did he give reasons why?

How does the PQ of the LG BD390 compare to the Panasonic BD60? I currently have the BD60 and the PQ is phenomenal (I even sold the PS3 because I liked the BD60 so much).

You can check out the show here to see what he has to say:

It is toward the end of the show. He really knows his stuff and has been a leading writer and tester of HD for tech publications for a while. The show is just getting started, but it really is worth the 20 minutes or so each week for HD fans. They also do it as a video podcast you can subscribe to.

My only experiences have been the Sony BDP-S300, the PS3 and the LG BD390, and the 390 puts them all to shame. At least on my set up, so this result doesn't shock me.

A couple of factors for its rating that I can see:

1. Fast load time. Even in Winston's tests, it was one of the fastest out there.

2. The "extras", with Netflix, CinemaNow and home media streaming with Divx, mkv, etc.

Ah, yes, that is true as well. Attach a USB FreeAgent (or similar) drive loaded with divx, mkv, avi, etc (as well as pictures and music) and you don't even have to stream over a network.

The thing is a solid, quick-loading bluray player, a Popcorn Hour and Roku box rolled into one.

FWIW....I just returned an LG 390 for stuttering and lipsynch issues. Replaced it with a JVC. Granted, the JVC doesn't have WiFi, nor Netflix, but everything else is there.

Even the GUI looks the same as the LG.

No stuttering or lipsynch with it, either. Great PQ.....less than $200.

Was that stuttering and lipsynch with bluray, or with streaming? The only problems I have heard about was with streaming, and then only divx, which is being fixed with firmware.

I have had no problem with lipsynching at all, with any type of media. Must have been a bad batch.

I override his recommendation and pick the Oppo BDP-83 or Sony PS3 because of fast load times AND upgradable firmware on a constant basis.

Probably true about the firmware upgrades. I have had my BD390 for a month and have only had two firmware upgrades.
