Rogers outlines HD additions

9/19/2003

TORONTO - Rogers Cable today announced it has added TSN HD to its line-up in Ontario and New Brunswick, and also which other HD channels are to be added in the coming weeks.

With Rogers Sportsnet, Rogers Cable now has two all sports high-definition (HD) channels as part of its package of eleven HD channels. However, the channels do not offer all-HD content as the amount of content available in the format is still limited.

Sportsnet, for example, is offering some Toronto Blue Jays games in HD and has plans to do some Toronto Raptors and NHL games this winter. TSN also plans to offer NHL games in HD this coming season.

Rogers' digital customers will find TSN in high definition on channel 278. TSN is producing several CFL games in HD along with delivering ESPN's Sunday Night Football. As part of the evolution from standard to high-definition, TSN will also acquire and produce HD programming.

"We're pleased Rogers is offering TSN in HD to its high definition subscribers," said Rick Brace, president, CTV Inc. "This agreement is an important step toward the future of HD and solidifies our plan to be at the forefront of the evolution of HD."

This Sunday, TSN in HD viewers can watch the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on the Montreal Alouettes at 1 p.m. EST and NFL fans can catch the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins at 8:30 p.m.

"We were the first cable company in Canada to launch an extensive line-up of HD channels back in 2001," said Michael Lee, vice-president of product development and management at Rogers Cable.

Rogers' HDTV channels now include HD versions of ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, City TV, The Movie Network, Viewer's Choice Pay Per View, HD Sportsnet and now HD TSN.

The company also announced it "plans to add HD Discovery and HD time-shifting of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and PBS to its digital cable service in the coming weeks," said the press release.

Customers who want HDTV signals will need to have the HDTV version of the Rogers digital set-top box. Rental of the HDTV set-top box is priced at $14.95 per month.
