Roku Express and SONY receiver

2670 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  hodgjy
Today I decided to take my Spectrum box out and add a Roku express. I am using a Sony 5.1 receiver and all was good moments ago when I could hear my favorite tv shows through my sub and TLAH's.

I installed the Roku with the HDMI to the TV HDMI 1, and ran an optical to the sony. Didn't work with sound...I than did the same with HDMI in the loop and still no sound.

Can someone enlighten me with the correct process to use Roku Express with sound coming out of my Sony av receiver.

Thank you.

It is a Sony STR DH500

If not can someone tell me the forum topic that can help?

The receiver doesn't support Dolby Digital+. I have the 510 on a secondary system, so I have to set the audio to PCM when using streaming boxes that use DD+.
Easy fix if the Roku Express is like the other Roku devices.

Go into Settings
Audio
HDMI
change from Auto Detect to either Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital,DTS

When set to Auto Detect it will send Dolby Digital Plus which your Sony can't decode. So change it to Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital, DTS

Don't change to PCM. You want something more than 2 channel stereo if possible.

This is good advice for most apps, but if the OP uses Netflix or Amazon Prime, the Roku cannot convert the DD+ to regular DD, so there won't be any sound. If those apps are used, PCM is the only format that will work.
Hmm, wonder what happens if he plugs the Roku Express directly into the Sony? I connected an older receiver and it can't handle Dolby Digital plus but when i switched the Roku HDMI audio to Dolby Digital I got sound, even thru Netflix and Prime.

I used an old Marantz sr4001 which only has HDMI 1.1. So it can't do DD+, True HD or DTS-MA. When my Roku was set to DD+ or Auto Detect I got no sound but when I switched it to Dolby Digital, DTS I got sound. You were right about Netflix and Prime, it sent a stereo signal but I didn't have to change the settings on the Roku to PCM in order to get any audio.

I remember when I had this Marantz connected to my Roku TV. I had the settings at Dolby Digital, DTS and used an optical connected from TV to AVR for audio. It would play Netflix and Prime in DD 5.1. Maybe because optical can't handle DD+ anyway. Actually, I currently have that Roku TV connected to a Denon AVR-1611 via optical and it will play Netflix and Prime in Dolby Digital 5.1

I don't have a Sony AVR so I can't duplicate his exact situation.

I think different receiver brands, through their HDMI handshakes, have different outcomes when handling DD+ from Rokus. I have the Sony STR-DH510, and when I plug my Roku Premiere+ directly into it, it can't handle DD+. Even if I set the Roku to output DD/DTS, I still get no sound. It's only fixed when I set it to PCM. It took me a bit to figure this out, because I thought just like you that the HDMI handshakes should have sorted it all out.
