I'm in the early stages for planning out my new basement home theater/ bar/ game room. I measured out my space and put it down on graph paper but I was wondering if there is a better digital way of doing this. I have a background in engineering and use autocad a little for work but licenses for the software are kind of expensive just to be doing some 2D layouts of my basement. I have used google sketchup a little but the 2D layout design is lacking unless you pay for the subscription. A google search just brings up a million different options but I wanted to check with AVS to see what the members here usually use.

i use my program for work to design my basement, very basic line-art drawing, but i can draw them to scale (within reason) pretty easily, at least for my purposes. can always tweak while i'm actually cutting wood for the bar, screen wall, etc. But this has helped a lot. Adobe Illustrator would work well also (i use that quite often) and i think you can get a demo for free, just cannot print or output, but would be enough to do your layouts and perhaps do a screen shot if you need to print it from another program.

i have the same project going on now... basement theater setup, pool table, bar area, and poker table spot. A fairly large room, 30 deep, and approx 28wide at the widest parts...
carpet comes out friday, and planning to start cutting wood to build the two bar areas, and screen wall next week!! can't wait. been a few years (and a 'new' home even) in the making! Got all the audio gear a few weeks ago, ordered the theater seating a few weeks ago, picked out carpet and flooring recently, now to pull the carpet, and get to work!!

Good luck with your project!
