I know that RG6 coax can be used (with RCA connectors) to effectively route a composite signal thru a house (e.g., scenario is local DVD player to central preamp/amp, and then back to local speakers over speaker cable).

Wondering if the same method can be used to cover L/R analog audio outputs from the local source? I was intending to use a Cat5 tranceiver, but this can get expensive.

Are there other alternatives?

You could also use 2 pair individually shielded wire for left and right channels. It is beyond the specification for unbalanced audio but it would not hurt to give it a try. Unbalanced audio at greater lengths than you require have been successfully run. 2 pair shielded takes more skill to terminate ( you need to solder ) but it is an other option; and a better sounding option than using coaxial cables.

Yes, you can send analog audio over coax. Be sure to use coax with a solid copper center conductor -- the stuff at Home Depot et al is generally a thin layer of copper over steel (which is appropriate for RF, but not for baseband).
