RP-CRT, speakers and magnetism

I'm looking at getting a Toshiba 46H84 CRT rear projection HDTV. Unfortunately I have very little room for my Mirage 595is front speakers to be placed at this set's side. I think the speakers will be about 12-18" from the set. The 595is is a floor standing, unshielded speaker. Right now I can get them within a few inches of my 32" Sony Wega SDTV without any distortion. Will I have more or less trouble with a RP-CRT than a direct view CRT? I have read that most of the problems with direct view CRT sets and magnetism arise from designs not shared with RP sets. Any truth too this? I'd really hate to buy this set only to find my speakers need to be two feet or more away from it. I'm not sure what I would do--moving the speakers further away would present a major issue for my wife as they would become much more prominent in the room. I have an irregular shaped room and trust me when I say, the speakers really have to stay where they are. Also, I can't afford a DLP or LCD, so that point is also moot.

Nice speakers btw xwill, the same distance will in all likelihood be fine (possibly a bit closer), because the tubes inside a RP are buried a little more in the set since it is quite a bit larger than your 32". But I do believe RP CRT shares the same downfall with direct view sets with magnetism. But let a electrical engineer answer that one.

Less-to-zero trouble. Direct-view single-CRT (three-gun) sets use the shadow-mask principle, which is quite susceptible to external magnetic fields. Three-CRT RPTVs, with electrostatically focused CRTs projecting images via a mirror and lenses, aren't as susceptible. (Electron beams can always be influenced by very strong magnetic fields, though.) -- John

That's another thing I'm worried about. I live very, very close to an electric trolly (the Green Line T in Boston). I'm not kidding when I say this TV will be about 25-30 feet from the trains and their corresponding electrical lines. I wonder what kind of field is generated by that system and if it would affect the TV? The only reason I can afford the 46H84 is because Sears is crediting me $600 for a Sony direct-view CRT that has been deemed unfixable. Secretly, I think the distortion on my current set is being caused or influenced by the train. Before I moved the TV was fine. After I moved, I started getting some green and magenta every now and then in the TV's corners. It is intermittent and I have seen it get worse when the train goes by (subtly worse, nothing dramatic).

Ahhh, the pleasures of city living.

Matt, regarding the 595is, I love them. I almost sold them and the rest of my Mirage speakers for a sub/sat system to save space in my living room. I actually purchased a Mirage Nanosat system and was incredibly dissappointed by it once hooked up in my home. I brought it back and have decided that the 595's sweet sound just can't be recreated by anything smaller. My wife wasn't too psyched at that sentiment, but, I just couldn't compromise the sound of my home theater!
