Please help!
I have been going in circles trying to set up a home theater (NOT a completely dedicated room) with a front projector. CRT won't fit in the room well, DLP gives me eye strain, LCD didn't excite, I haven't had the chance to see JVC DILA yet. But soon I am heading into building hushbox, of course the blackout shades, the electric screen to come down over a 42" plasma so I can watch casual TV without pulling all the shades, electric masking if I don't like the bars.... And so it goes. Then the other day I walked past a 64" Pioneer 720 (I believe) and I thought the picture was VERY NICE. It turns out that the protective screen had been removed. I had never been that excited by the RPTV's I had seen, and that included the 64" Pioneer and the 65" Mitsubishi, but I think that was because the screen glare made them seem less "film-like." So now I am considering an RPTV in order to simplify my life...can use it for TV and film, don't absolutely need the blackout shades, etc. So......here are my questions. Is there a difference in picture quality and picture "characteristics" between a top RPTV and a front projector OF EQUAL SCREEN SIZE? In other words, comparing an RPTV with 7" lens and 65" screen to a FRTV with 7" lens projecting onto a 65" screen (I know, most people would have a much bigger screen....BUT, if I am willing to live with a 65" picture at our 13 ft viewing distance, and give up my original goal of a 30 degree field of vision for that "immersive" effect, or for that matter a 73" picture with the Mitsubishi (now we can compare this to a FPTV with 9" lenses, right?), then am I giving up ANYTHING in terms of picture quality, resolution, film-like quality, etc??? AND QUESTION TWO: I would be inclined to go with the 73" Mitsubishi just to get the larger screen, but I would be buying this sight unseen. How does the 73" Mits compare to the 65" Mits (diamond 73909 vs 65909)?? Just bigger? or bigger AND better because of the 9" lens. They make such a big deal about 7 vs 8 vs 9 " lenses in FPTV's (brightness and resolution), do such things apply in the same manner for rpTV's? How does the 64" Pioneer compare with the 65" Mits (since I may not be able to see a Mits with the protective screen off, and that made a great deal of difference to me, at least).
