RS-1 prebuy idiot here....

2417 Views 7 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  dreamer
OK, So I am on the prebuy list. Last night the bank, errr.....I mean beloved wife, asked me how much it was. "Ummm, errrr, I forgot honey". Guess I better call Jason

Also, I have 20' to work with on my ceiling to mount this thing.

I have a 123" Firehawk, very dark, almost bat cave (Wife calls it the dungeon) dedicated 99% light controlled room.

Anyone else going RS-1 with a screen this big or bigger? How far away will you be mounting it?

Some of these threads have me concerned about brightness with a screen of this size.

If it is that dark I would not worry about it at all. I have the Pearl on a 104" screen in a non light controled room and it is more than bright enough. Actually has a window and a sliding glass door and with all lights on daytime HD football is extremely bright in high lamp mode. I watch movies with shades and at night so it is very dark in low lamp mode and I would have no problem going that big in a total controled room. If the RS1 is any more than the Pearl than you will be just fine. MY .02

Why Firehawk if you have a dedicated room, a Studiotek 130 would IMO be much better.

The Firehawk is a compromise that doesn't exist in the "creation" of a movie and thus preferably should not be there for the "playback" of a movie if you want it as "correct" as possible.

Just my 2c
It's going to be slightly on the dim side by the time you put a few hours on the bulb. You'd be better off with a white and/or higher gain screen.
I really don't think he will have a problem with that screen running in the high lamp mode or even low lamp mode in a light controlled environment with darker interior colored walls, ceiling etc. The Firehawk has a spec'd 1.3 gain but, it actually measures closer to 1.1 because of the gray base material. I'd say experiment first and if your not happy then switch to a different material.

If you already have the screen, just try the PJ and see what you think. If it gets too dim (or dims after a while) buy a new bulb or sell your screen and get new high gain white one. Why worry... life is too short.
If you are mounting at min throw you may be able to get away with it. But if you are mounting closer to max throw I think it'll be quite a stretch to get a punchy picture out of it once the lamp ages.
I'll be mounting my RS1 about 18' away from a 123" Vutec Bright White screen. I think the Vutec is 1.1 gain.

My room is not completely light controlled, and this same arrangement has been fine with my G1000 for the last 6 years. Since the RS1 is considerably brighter than my G1000, I am not concerned.
