I just received my RS-1. After a speedy setup..as I was dark for nearly six months, I first thought the unit was defective. ie:Using the Toshiba HD-A1 ( firmware 1.4 I think) there was no HDMI function with either input, just a glimmer and then no input/blue screen.

I switched to another player and cable, the Oppo 971H and first tried the component input on the JVC...worked fine giving me some relief. I then tried the HDMI inputs with the Oppo as source...success I thought. It would work for awhile and then switch off to a blue screen...no input. Dead again.

I'm 99% sure the HDMI inputs are defective..BUT...I'm considering the possibility that these oldest models( that worked just fine in HDMI with the older Sony HS-51) may be incompatible with the JVC.
Has anyone had success with these older players with the JVC?

As my RS1 tested well in important particulars I'm going to keep it and send it to JVC when my theatre gets painted (dark) etc.

If AVS had bushels of extras lying around, I'd likely make another decision.

Try it with a short HDMI cable.


The cable you use might be the issue.

No problems with my A1 to HD1 via hdmi or component.

I have the RS1 connected to my VP50 using a 40 foot HDMI cable (monoprice) and send it 1080p (tried both 60Hz and 24Hz).


The VP50 is fed from the Oppo 970 via HDMI, the STB via DVI (using a DVI/HDMI adapter), a media player (Eureka LX350HD) also via DVI and finally a Xbox 360 via component.


I do not have a hddvd ... yet

Everything seems to be working fine ...

I have found the inputs on the RS1/HD1 are less tolerant of signal degradation than some other units. For example, I bought a cheap 10m HDMI cable from Amazon. It worked to my Philips LCD TV from my E1. Went to the HD1 and I got nothing except, frequency out of range messages, or no input.


I then tried what I thought was an overpriced Ixos cable and everything started working.


If you are just on the edge with the signal degradation it may work sometimes and not others based on other factors like RF interference etc at the time.

I have an A1 from May 2006 and it works fine with the JVC over a 10m cable. I'm currentlly using firmware 2.2

Thanks to everyone.

I'm pleased to hear that the cable is likely the issue. The HD-A1 cable though pricey is 25'. The Oppo cable DVI-HDMI is ~ 12' and not expensive.(this was for experiment only- part of family room LCD television setup

In the revised theatre layout, the projector will be very close to inputs (players and dish receiver) and hopefully my problems will resolve.

Incidently, the 40 foot HDMI cable I am using is the 22awg version one from Monoprice ...

you really should call up toshiba and get the newest firmware for the player.


besides that, are you sure your V output setting for the A1 is correct (the button on the remote directly above ...maybe below...the 480/720/1080 button).

UPDATE

I tried a short HDMI/HDMI cable, by locating the players next to the JVC. The cable is an ~4' cheapie that came in the box.

The short run does NOT work with the Toshiba HD-A1. I will upgrade the firmware as I've called Toshiba to supply 2.2, the latest. Also, today I will go to acquire a HDMI to DVI to use the OPPO with the short cable. I'll order a super quality short cable( though I don't think this is the answer). The prior cables that did not work, the DVI/HDMI and HDMI/HDMI, both 25 footers were not cheapies that cost ~$300. for the pair.

There is a subtle problem at hand that I still don't have the answer to.

Jason tested both HDMI inputs and tells me they tested fine....a puzzlement!

Brian, you have to switch the output signal on the HD DVD player. If you were getting a signal using the component out/in, you will need to switch the V output to use HDMI.

This is exactly what happened to me the first time I tried to run an HDMI line to my pj and I came here and posted the exact same problem. I'm pretty sure this is where your problem is.

Problem Over?-Mystery Continues

After running the RS1 for a few hours with component input only, I tried one more time with the short cheap cable using the HD-A1 with the out of date firmware, and to my surprise and pleasure...HDMI functions.

I can only guess that a mislocated bit of charge was interfering with a semiconductor switching or whatever. I hope the phenomenon does not reappear and just stays as a mystery.

The new firmware update from JVC lists this :


2. Intermittent picture interruption through the Component Input when used with some AV Amplifiers has been improved



so it would seem they've loosened up the tolerance on the component input.
