RS1/XA2 HDMI syncing problem

1312 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Vic C
I have my XA2 connected to my RS1 via a thirty-something foot HDMI cable going through a powered 4x2 HDMI splitter. I'm having some weird blue screen sync problems.

Sometimes the two units link up and everything goes perfectly. Other times, I get an image, but then it flashes back to a blue screen about every five seconds. It looks like the HDMI is trying to sync, syncing, then losing sync.

I haven't had enough time to fully test the problem, but it sometimes seems like it can be fixed by turning on the XA2 first and waiting for it to start outputting video before turning on the RS1. Maybe that's an acceptable work around, but I don't know if that works everytime yet.

Anyone else seen this or something like it? My XA2 is running FW 1.5, btw.

I did own the Gefen 4*2 switcher/splitter too.

Problem has to do with the repeater bit and the time delays of going through multiple HDMI devices and HDMI handshaking every two seconds. Yes this Gefen is really two serial devices (a switcher and then a splitter) in series.

Gefen is trying to get this very nasty problem to work with a firmware upgrade, but I have no faith in spending over $500 in a product that does not work as-is.

Hopefully we will soon get some relief as the existing HDMI chip manufactures have stalled out in this key area:

If you have the genfen which I have. What ive been doing is switching either the hdmi switch or the display on the plasma from component to hdmi. ive yet to try the two hdmi out's at the same time since I dont have my stereo hooked up yet. After doing that I don't have any problem's. Only happen's when I turn on the plasma with the cable box. Haven't noticed if it does it with the A2 since my tv has always been on when I turned on the A2.
So I guess this is a known issue. My switch is all black, and I don't know if it's the Gefen (I'm not at home to check), but it looks like the same design.

If the work around is just jumping over to compenent on the RS1, then back to HDMI, that's no biggie. Unless there's another option for 4x2 HDMI switching out there, I might just live with the problem.

Buttabean, were you experiencing the same symptom with the couple seconds of picture, couple seconds of blue screen?
I just found my switch online. It's the Purelink brand. Still... sounds like the same defect as the Gefen.
Yeah it would flicker off and on trying to sync. Does your audio drop and make noise in sync with the video? Mine Does. Next week I should have everything hooked up(minus the rs1 but with the hp plasma) so i'll let you know if I ended up with a different outcome.
I'm using the 5.1 analogs for audio, not HDMI.
FWIW, the problem is fixable by switching the input on the RS1 to component, then back to HDMI. Some times it takes a couple switches to get a solid sync, but so far I've never been stuck and unable to get it working.

Not ideal, by a long shot, but better than nothing.
Jeff maby go in the menu and change the HDMI to NORMAL from enhanced or vice a versa. I saw that there are differant settings for the HDMI input and really dont know what thats for. I dont use the HDMI inputs on the RS-1 so I really dont know if that can or will solve your problem but its worth a try. What you are doing is going to have to be done everytime you turn on your system and to me that a royal P I T A!
