Running Video through Receiver. Is it 'that' bad?

1174 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Steve S
Receiver is the Onkyo TX-SR702 and the cable source will be TW HD STB. TV will be the new JVC D-ila that comes out in November....

I don't think TW is using the DVI-out on the STB yet so I'd just be running component. My XBox is my DVD player which is component also.....

So will it be 'that' bad running my video into my receiver then out to my TV?

Thanks!

glweeks,

I had tried running DVD component out to component in on my receiver (Onkyo TX-SR800), and from receiver to TV and found the picture quality to look worse when compared to a direct DVD to TV (Samsung HLN507W) component connection. The direct DVD to TV connection was in my opinion more "clear" or "crisp." There may be a difference with the newer generation Onkyo receivers. I suspect the best bet would be to try both connections and stick with the one that is most pleasing to your eyes.
What about a Marantz 7300ose receiver? I have DVD to receiver to TV, hope I'm not losing PQ. Not sure if I ran tuner to TV or turner to receiver to TV tho.
I found the same dedgration of the video signal using a higher end Denon AVR 5800 receiver which is said to have the bandwidth to pass a video signal. Whenever possible, direct connect......!
Wow. I might have to play around and do some tests. I used my TV's component outs for just PS2. What would be the best thing to do? DVD and cable box to TV and PS2 to receiver? And I thought my PQ was awesome (36" Panny HD CRT tube)
I just tried this using an sir-ts360 STB to a Harman-Kardon AVR635 reciever out to a Sam HLN507W. I used the component connections and the picture quality of DTV standard and HD was awful. Poor resolution and everything had an overpowering green tint. I was hoping this would have worked so that the reciever would do all the source switching but it is just too poor. I am going back to DVI between the STB and the TV unless anyone has any ideas how to improve this.

For everyone else, if you are looking to pass component through your receiver, you should look to see what the video bandwidth is in the receiver's specs.

what should be the minimum to pass quality video?
I believe that 720p/1080i HDTV requires 37MHz of video bandwidth. Most people recommend having a higher video bandwidth just in case.
Wow, I guess I'm lucky. I've got a Denon AVR-3300 that's 6 yrs old and the HD signals coming from my SA8300HD DVR (Provided by TWC) look almost on par with image quality out the component through the receiver to the TV as they do with direct HDMI connection. Both are awesome and I leave the TV sourced to component most of the time in order to not confuse the wife (honey the DVD player won't work and I've switched the receiver to DVD like you told me ....) The only time I change it is when I'm watching a high quality HD source such as from the Discover Channel most of the HD sources you can't tell the difference at all and I got to remember to change it back because I've got my wife trained to currently use the receiver as the HT Switch :) I don't want to toss another variable in there because her poor little head just my explode (actually she's very intelligent - just AV illiterate.)

I've also tried my DVD player direct connect with component vs going through the receiver and there's no difference in image quality.

This is going to an HLP5674W Sammy DLP that I've cal'd w/ DVE and check with three other test suites.

With that said there's absolutely no discernible degradation of image quality of the component video signal when going through my receiver.

I've used the component video switching for HD from my Directv HD box on a Pioneer VSX-45tx, Yamaha RXV-1400, Denon AVR-2805, and my current HK AVR-635. I've never seen any degradation in the signal vs going straight to the tv.

I'd strongly suggest johnfern recheck his connections and perhaps try different cables, there's nothing inherent in the design of the HK 635 that would cause what he described, mine works like a charm. If new cables and rechecking connections to make sure you have them all going to the right place doesn't help then perhaps his individual receiver is defective.
