I NEED HELP WITH RS232, I HAVE BOUGHT A WACI NX+ FOR THE IR OVER IP CONTROL BUT, I WANT TO CONTROL SOME THINGS WITH RS232 ALSO.

I HAVE A RUSSOUND CAV6.6 AND A DENON AVR2106 THAT I HAVE CONNECTED TO THE WACI AND I CANT GET IT TO WORK FOR ANYTHING. I AM A NEWBIE AT RS232 "PLEASE GO LIGHT ON ME" AND I CAN'T MAKE HEADS OR TAILS OF "I CAN'T BE THAT DUMB" - O.K. MAYBE A LITTLE - DURR - D - DURR. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS

Sorry about all the yelling : Don't have much hair left after this one. I guess I need a vacation. Is there an easy way of explaining to a now balding overworked guy that doesn't know squat about RS232?

Thanks again.

My entirely personal opinion is that handling RS232 control of devices, and dealing with any stability or network distribution (ie allow any PC on your network to control your CAV66/Denon) is something better left to a commercial engine that specializes in such things.

I use real HA/HT software [CQC - www.charmedquark.com] to do both management over all my devices, be it RS232/IR/IP, and the front-end screen painting. It's got device drivers for nearly 100 different devices already, and more are in the works as we speak. There's no driver yet for the 2106, but there is one for the CAV66.

A few of us wrote up some control screens for the CAV66 - you could be fully enjoying your CAV66 control within a few days if you went down that route.

Check out the website in my sig for the screenshots of my setup. Right now I personally control:

- Xantech ZPR68 preamp (RS232)

- Denon 3805 (RS232)

- Aprilaire 8870 HVAC (RS232)

- RAIN8NET irrigation (RS232)

- Polk XRt12 XM tuner (RS232)

- Elk Automation Panel (think ADT on steroids - security/fire/theft/doorbell/telephone. was RS232, I've now switched to the ethernet driver)

I know there's others, i'm just blanking.

Anyhow, I think the fact that you're yelling, and you haven't even started this yet means you should strongly look at least the base CQC package. It's $215, think of it as either buying CQC or mucho alcohol and qualudes cuz you'll never do as good as job as a company that's in the business of doing that.

There's a 30 day free trial - you could always download it, try it out, and rip it out if you don't like it.

Here's the one screenshot of my Denon control. I'm also attaching a screenshot of the CAV66 screen I wrote for someone else. Don't focus too much on the UI - you can change any bit of that easily. Focus more on the fact that it can be done easily.

You're more than welcome to any of these templates.

Here's some others that the CAV66 owners did:

Finally, here's one that another user is in the midst of building, not yet complete:

RS-232 is usually pretty easy to do. If you call into Aurora Multimedia they can help you get going fairly easily. The devices you are trying to control should come with a list of RS-232 commands and the baud rate to set the ports. Without even writing any code you should be able to send 232 strings using the diagnostics page built in the WACI. Once you get that going then you should be able to quickly add it to the actions of the events.

I just got a CAM 6.6 and want to do serial control too. What is the correct cable to do this? DB-9? Null modem cable?

Thanks.
Hi,

I do not know what a CAM 6.6 is. I am assuming it may be a 6.6 megapixel camera. Anyway, the WACI RS-232 ports are wired the same way as a PC for RX and TX. So in other words you would make the same connection as you would to a PC. Also, a good thing to have which helps a lot is to pick up a null modem adapter from Radio Shack. It makes life easy when you are not certain. It is only a few dollars and is a hugh time saver when it comes time to debug.
