My entirely personal opinion is that handling RS232 control of devices, and dealing with any stability or network distribution (ie allow any PC on your network to control your CAV66/Denon) is something better left to a commercial engine that specializes in such things.
I use real HA/HT software [CQC - www.charmedquark.com] to do both management over all my devices, be it RS232/IR/IP, and the front-end screen painting. It's got device drivers for nearly 100 different devices already, and more are in the works as we speak. There's no driver yet for the 2106, but there is one for the CAV66.
A few of us wrote up some control screens for the CAV66 - you could be fully enjoying your CAV66 control within a few days if you went down that route.
Check out the website in my sig for the screenshots of my setup. Right now I personally control:
- Xantech ZPR68 preamp (RS232)
- Denon 3805 (RS232)
- Aprilaire 8870 HVAC (RS232)
- RAIN8NET irrigation (RS232)
- Polk XRt12 XM tuner (RS232)
- Elk Automation Panel (think ADT on steroids - security/fire/theft/doorbell/telephone. was RS232, I've now switched to the ethernet driver)
I know there's others, i'm just blanking.
Anyhow, I think the fact that you're yelling, and you haven't even started this yet means you should strongly look at least the base CQC package. It's $215, think of it as either buying CQC or mucho alcohol and qualudes cuz you'll never do as good as job as a company that's in the business of doing that.
There's a 30 day free trial - you could always download it, try it out, and rip it out if you don't like it.
Here's the one screenshot of my Denon control. I'm also attaching a screenshot of the CAV66 screen I wrote for someone else. Don't focus too much on the UI - you can change any bit of that easily. Focus more on the fact that it can be done easily.
You're more than welcome to any of these templates.
