Rythmik DIY - Dual 12s or single 15

1670 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  mikieson
So I'm contemplating a foray into the DIY world with a Rythmik subwoofer kit. Currently I'm having trouble deciding on which to go with. My room size is ~3500 ft^3 that includes a kitchen and dining area with an open staircase leading to the second and third floors. I will primarily use this system for HT and gaming and since I live in a townhome, will not be blaring music at reference levels very often. High SQ, dynamic and articulate bass is what i'm looking for and the Rythmik seems like it might be the answer.

Can anyone offer opinions on which sub setup I would be better off with? I'm also considering possibly adding another sub later which is causing me to lean towards the DS1500 for now. This sub will be paired with my Ascend Acoustics CMT-340 SE L/C/R and CBM-170 and all of it is tied together with a Pioneer Elite SC-05.

While I appreciate the quick response, I am unsure what the purpose of your post was. I read it and tried to research the 18n850 but couldn't find a price or even much information beyond random forum posts. If you have a better product link I would appreciate it. I am definitely open to other possibilities than the Rythmik kits, but at the same time the "approved" designs that they have posted seem very easy to follow and I don't have to engineer any kind of box design.

**edit**

Found the BMS website.
the idea is that within subs there are two camps...the mid-bass guys and the super-deep guys. i tried to talk a little about the differences and mentioned a few brands in each direction.

before, you can get honest direction, you have to ask yourself, what you want. once that is established, folks can suggest drivers, amps, eq, etc. that will nail your goal.
just to expand on this a bit.

jbl uses the 2242h driver (more or less) in its cost-no-object home theater systems. it is an efficient, pro audio style, driver that is put in an enclosure tuned to 25hz. for most folks, this amounts to an absolute BLASTING of bass. however, to others, since it rolls off around 20 hz, it doesn't pick up the subharmonics.

ricci has build using the xxx 18" in a huge ported enclosure with a very low tune, ~15hz if i recall. subjectively, he remarks the thing sounds like a jackhammer pounding on the foundation of his home while playing deep bass. however, it is not so good for reproducing the upper bass 70-100hz that is associated with the "punch" in lots of rock music.

sorry if i confused things in an attempt to clarify. :)

That looks like a great system. Headroom is good!
I've not heard the 15" version, but I would expect a single 15" to have the edge in value, and dual 12s to have the edge in SQ. If you go with duals, you have a couple of extra benefits you can take advantage of... you can place them in different locations to help even out room response, or you can place them in the same box and reverse mount one driver to reduce 2nd order harmonic distortion (as well as box vibrations if mounted on opposite ends of the enclosure). Two twelves will also have a little more displacement than a single 15". I'm not sure if it's still the case, but Rythmik used to also offer a kit with two 12" drivers and one amp, which helps get the kit price closer to the single 15". That setup is more suitable to two drivers in one enclosure, as there's a servo wire length limit that limits how far the amp can be from the drivers, and you also wouldn't want to "share" one servo control between two enclosures.

Personally, I've been thrilled with the Rythmik kits. Started with two twelves, then doubled that when I needed to build a new box anyway. Four wasn't really necessary, but you can't have too much headroom.

FWIW, I built a Rythmik / GR dual 12 sub. A sub with opposed drives has some key advantages.
I was not very clear about that in my initial post, if it was dual 12s it would be a single enclosure with 2 drivers mounted opposite each other. I'm looking more for deeper bass response than upper bass, but don't need single digit extension.

All of these factors kind of pushed me in the Rythmik direction, but like I mentioned I'm still open to other recommendations. What are the key advantages you mean stereodude?
The box ends up being completely inert. There are no vibrations in the box because all the forces from the two drivers cancel out. You can balance change on edge on the box while it plays at full volume.

LTD02. Please don't put words in my mouth. I don't believe that I ever said that exactly. You've been pushing this subject a lot lately. I'm going to start a discussion thread on it.
While I dont have much to add to this topic. I can say I have 3 subs. 2 12's and 1 15"...I have plenty of deep pulsating bass that rattles the house and every house around me.

What I miss is the quick punch, more acuarate bass that I use to get out of my Cerwin Vega at-12 back in the day. They not only had great bass, but were probably the best speakers for rocking the house with complete whole sound.

Im thinking of getting some new ones in a few months to use with my music instead of my subs..I really miss the quick, ON time no fuss no muss sound.
