If you have an HDTV with a line doubler (Sony DRC in my case), is there any benefit to picture quality from the S-video to Component conversion feature in some home theater receivers, other than reducing the number of connecting cables to the television?

Nope. It should remain the same. The receiver is being used just as a switching device.

It made a significant and positive difference coming out of my directivo(non-HD) through a Denon 3805 to my Toshiba 57hx83.I don't know why but the image is much improved.

Highly unlikely, unless the cables you used before were bad in some way. Because there is absolutely nothing inside the 3805. That will make it improve upon a video signal in any way, over what it already is.
