Some background. Currently in my man cave, I have a 7yr old 42in Sammy DLP. My bulb is about to go out again and I am using this as an excuse too upgrade.

I mainly use the TV in the evening so lighting won't be a big deal most of the time. It will be used for sports, movie watching and some gaming.

From the research I have done, plasma is the best bang for the buck. My budget is around $700-$800. I really don't care about 3d or smart TV since I have several gaming consoles and a roku. Also have a HD receiver so speakers are not important.

Best Buy has the new model Pan 50S60 for $699 but Sam's has last years 60U50 for $799. Either would be a huge upgrade from my 42 inch 720p dlp.

Are the added features, pic quality worth the sacrifice of the screen size?

Thanks

I would definitely go with the 50S60, it's a substantial improvement.

Brighter, better blacks, sharper, etc.

If you can wait a little longer I would see what the prices are o the S64 model (this is the club version of the s series). This will be S model but with the ST filter on it.......YOu may also be able to get it in 60" by that time as well......

From the looks of it so far, the sizes for the S64 will be 50" and 65", with no mention of 55 or 60. Sams has a listing of the 65" at $1448 currently. Just something to consider as there may or may not be other sizes offered.

You are having the classic size vs quality dilemma. I am currently going through the same thing. As much as I love picture quality, there IS a lot to be said for a screen that is 10" bigger. From a 50" to a 60", you are talking a 44% bigger picture overall.

Yeah I know. While I want the best picture I can afford, its not like I'm real nitpicky. Seems like several are happy with the U54 and it also comes with the filter. That is a lot more TV....

I'm also reconsidering LCD instead because of the several IR/burn-in while gaming threads I'm seeing. I'm actually playing Halo 4 right now and there was a thread about game on this forum today. Thats one issue I didn't have to worry about with the DLP.

After comparing the 2 in person, I went with the p50s60. While it might have been store settings, the picture just looked better on the s60. Plus after viewing them, I decided 50 inches was about as big as I wanted for the narrow space I have to work with in my bedroom sized man-cave. Also I can control the lighting in my room so no filter needed.
