Hello all! Thanks to this forum, I recently purchased the Onkyo S790 and was looking for some suggestions as to hook this system up. I'm looking to get the best quality sound/video (aren't we all) but not quire sure which cables I should be buying. Below is a list of all the components I have. Thanks in advance for the advice!!

The video is pretty straight forward, 2 HDMI cables to the TV (cable box and DVD player). All your component video can run through the receiver. For the 2 HDMI devices, run optical back into the receiver also, HDMI will disable audio if there is an optical link present (atleast all my HDMI devices do this)...

Your 360 should come with component video cables so no need to buy that. You'll need 2 HDMI cables from the DVD and cable box to the TV(Buy them at Monoprice if you haven't purchased them yet). Component cable from the DVD recorder to the receiver, then another component cable out from receiver, into TV.

I would also run optical cable (sound) from both your HDMI devices into the receiver. So 2 optical cables also.

I might have missed something, but I don't think so. Maybe someone else could chime in...

Also, how would I hook my Xbox through the receiver. I see where mxthor3 says to hook the 360 to the TV via component video. But how will I get sound from the receiver?

Does an Xbox have a digital out, like optical? I honestly don't know, but if it does, run it to the receiver using a second optical, then set whatever selection you use for it (v1, v2, etc.) to the corresponding optical input (Optical 1, 2, etc.)

The Xbox 360 HD AV component cable has an optical output on it. Just buy an optical cable from monoprice and you should be set.

Ok, let me know if this setup will work or am I missing something....

Cable Box--> TV via HDMI, then Optical from Cable box to receiver.

DVD Player--> TV via HDMI, then Optical from DVD Player to receiver.

DVD Recorder--> TV and Receiver via Component cable (still not quite sure about this one)

XBOX 360--> TV via component, then optical from Xbox to receiver.

Are you just using the DVD recorder for recording? You'll need a way to get the audio from the TV to the recorder along with the component video (unless it's a video/audio cable combined).

Yes, the DVD recorder is just being used to record. I'll play the movies in the HDMI player.

Recorder Connections:

Inputs- Composite x 1 Analog Audio x 1

Outputs- S-Video x 1, Component x 1, Analog Audio x 1, Digital Audio Coaxial x 1, Digital Audio Optical x 1

From the back of your cable box, run the composite out+rca to your recorder. Then your recorder to the recvr-tv. I believe you should still have a signal out of the composites even though you are going to use the hdmi also.

So I just use one of those 5 plug RCA Component cables that have video/audio and be done with the recorder hookup?

2. 5-plug(video/audio) RCA Component from DVD Recorder into TV
