I have a Scientific Atlanta 3250HD STB and a Samsung LN-S3251D LCD TV. I am using the upscaling function in the STB to upscale all 480i ---> 480p. And it also upscales all HD to 1080i.

My LCD supports 1080i and 720p. After viewing the HD channels in both formats, the 1080i is much sharper and more accurate as far as colors. When selecting 720p for the HD channels, the image is similar to 480p, but not similar to 1080.

My screen is 1366x768, so I figured 720p would look better when i selected it through the STB since its closer to my native resolution.

Anyone have any suggestions as to why 720 does not appear sharp, and 1080 looks better overall? There is a significant difference. I have cox cable.

What do you have the video output set to? Fixed, Pass Through, Upconvert1, Upconvert2?

set to upconvert 1, which i believe is the 480p/1080. I tried using the fixed setting, turned on discovery HD, and then switched between 720 and 1080. 720 wasn't even close to the 1080. Tried it on a couple HD channels. I wonder why there would be the option to have upconvert 2 (480p/720p) if most HD channels are 1080 anyways.

My screen's native resolution is closer to 720 vs 1080, so that's why I figured the 720p setting for HD channels would look better than 1080........it was a big difference in PQ. 1080 is amazing.

Give pass through a try, and run the setup on the box if you have not. Press info and guide on the front at the same time while the box is powered off. Use the advanced settings.

Ive gone through the setup and everything is done properly. The TV accepts 480i/p, 720p, 1080i.

I have been happy with the upconvert 1 setting since i've set it. I was more curious as to why the 720p format for HD was producing such an ugly picture. It was close to HD, but nowhere close to the 1080 PQ.

The 720 picture just wasnt "sharp"


EDIT: Even setting it to "pass through", and turning to fox HD which is 720p. The picture quality is worse than when it was at 1080 for the same channel Weird.

My guess is that the video processor does a better job with 1080i as an input source, i can only receive fox via antenna where i live and 1080i sports look better than what fox is broadcasting. I have a sony 34XBR960, espn hd looks great, as does abc and espn2 which are also 720p.
