SA 8300 Audio Problem--PLEASE HELP!!

657 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  twitchee3
I am a directv guy. For my dad's birthday, I bought him an HDTV. He has a SA 8300HD recorder from adelphia. The HDMI port does not work, so I set up component. I am trying to use red/white RCA for the audio, but I cannot for the life of me get sound. The sound on the TV is fine because I hooked a CD player to test. The cords are secure and in the right input. Is there a setting I need to fix to get the box to output analog instead of digital. This is causing a meltdown at my Dad's bday weekend.

Thanks!!!

I can only find a settings menu. For sound it says "Digital Audio" and gives me three choices: HDMI, DD, and "other." None of these setting work. Is there a separate set up menu apart from settings?
Those are the settings that usually resolve the problem with no audio and what SA recommends if you have an issue. If you are sure the connection cables are good, you might just have a bad 8300.
Just a thought. Have you checked to make sure the volume on the 8300 is turned up? There is a setting for Fixed or Variable (same place as the Digital Audio setting). If set to Fixed, volume is controlled by the 8300. If set to Variable, volume is controlled by the TV (or receiver).

Other way around...

Fixed, sets the STB output level to ~85%, similar to a CD player output that is fixed.

Variable, means that the output varies it's level to the amplifier or TV. With this setting, it's possible to have the output level all the way down at zero and hear nothing.

Thanks for the help.

I ended up swapping the 8300 for a different one, with HDMI active. I have TV connected with HDMI and it is working fine, although I get an occasional snowy or green screen which is fixed by switching the TV on and off.
vegggas, I knew it was the other way, not sure why I mixed them up. I have mine going into the receiver with Fixed and control it with the receiver. :)

Anyway, problem solved with new unit, so no harm, no foul. Not sure about the snowy or green screen. HDMI sure seems like too much work for the end result.
