SA8300 Widescreen through s-video?

328 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  LesMoss
Hi,

I will be picking up a Sony GX300 DVD recorder today in order to archive from VOOM and HD recorded shows on the 8300 and still make my recordings widescreen. (although i know it wont be true HD)

Does the 8300's s-video output current send out the 16:9 flag? It seems like voom sends out a true 16:9 signal but the svid output on my 8300 takes it upon itself to output a letterboxed 4:3.

My daily tv watching is done specifically with component and my 8300 is set to 1080i. The tech set the box to 1080i because the original one he was setting up got stuck at 480i and he couldnt get in to fix it, so he went to the easy set-up on the second box. (Cablevision LI)

Any feedback on this?

SVideo is NTSC, which is 4:3... what you are talking about is an anamorphic signal, which doesn't exist to my knowledge. You generally have two choices for downconversion from wide HD to narrow SD, either letterbox or 'center cut'.

The output resolution of your STB should be set to the native res of your display, 1080i for CRT based sets, 720p for most other types.

I knew people with 3250HD STBs (non-DVR) claimed they can record 16:9 through S-Video. There is really no reason why 8300HD can't do that. But that largely is a software issue.
Output from the 8300 and the 3250 is exactly the same.
Currently anamorphic output is not available. Sure would be nice if SA added that option and also "center cut" which is not available either.

I agree that it is simply a matter of software.
