Hi Guys,

I've just got a new receiver (Denon 3311) and noticed it doesn't have multi-channel analogue inputs, or decoding for DVD Audio or SACD.

To play my SACD's and DVD Audio discs I need to decode in my player and send the full uncompressed 6 channel PCM signals to the receiver via HDMI for amp/processing.

Does the HDMI interface (1.4) support enough bandwidth to take the full signals? - I'm not 100% sure of the sample rate/word length of the resulting PCM channels after decoding, but if it's 6 channels at 192/24 that's a high bitrate required?

Any HDMI standard from 1.1 to 1.4 will carry LPCM at 5.1 up to 24/192.

Whether your AVR can process and apply DSP/EQ/Audyssey at 24/192 is a separate question. Some are limited to 24/96. But you won't see any need for more than 24/96 with SACD and DVD-A.

DAC chips in mainstream receivers/processors have worse parameters (SNR, THD) for 24/192 data than for 24/96. So using 24/192 mode WORSENS sound quality.

Different specs do not = different sound quality. Only listening will determine that. More often than not the differences are inaudible. Given the relative rarity of 24/192 sources, it's a moot point.

FYI, DVD-A does not have 6CH 24/196, only 24/96 or 2CH 24/192 and no player in existence decodes DSD to 6CH 24/196, only a maximum of 24/176.4 (and only a handful can do this, the rest at 24/88.2 or 16/44.1).

Certainly true but this is not a compromise since the transcoding from DSD to PCM is accomplished with less complexity to 176.4 and 88.2 than it is to 192 or 96.

Hi Guys,

Have been out of the game for a while, I'm helping my brother with his first HD system, he is getting the Denon 3311 and is also interested in SACD.

Will he be able to get multichannel via HDMI from PS3 and Denon 3311?

I searched but could not understand if yes or no.

thank you

Only the early PS3s supported SACD; the 40GB version introduced in 2007 dropped that support. If your brother has one that does support multichannel SACD, it will internally decode the DSD and output the surround sound as multichannel LPCM (the same output it uses for other high-resolution multichannel codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA).

The table in the Wikipedia entry for the PS3 lists the model numbers that do and don't support SACD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

The Denon fully supports multichannel LPCM.

Thank you guys, it seems like the ps3 does support the SACD.

Another question, what if the sacd player are 1 of 2:

1- Old pioneer sacd player (don't remember the model #) that has the old 6 rca plugs for analog channels and digital output

2- new sacd that has both hdmi and digital output?

Thank you, much appreciate it.

Nope. The 3311 lacks 6xRCA analog input and one cannot send SACD output over digital (coax or optical).

If you use the HDMI.
