SACD/DVD-A questions

This maybe a dumb question, but regardless, I still want to know. I know that the best way to connect a high res player is from 5.1 analog output from the player into the 5.1 analog input of a processor. What about if I use the digital (coaxial or optical) output from the SACD/DVD-A Player connected to the coaxial or digital input of the processor, will I still get true high res multichannel audio?

No.
jarednoah,

The traditional digital audio output connections -- optical and coax -- will not carry the signal from an SACD disc. The reason why is tangled up in industry marketing and copy protection stuff.

However, if your SACD player has a firewire connection, often called I-link, that WILL carry the full digital, hi-res, multi-channel SACD audio signal to an audio processor or AV receiver that also has such a connection.

So if you want to get the best audio from SACD you should either use the internal processing in your player and connect up it's multi-channel analog audio outputs, or you should bypass the internal processing in your player by sending the digital data to your receiver via I-link. Which you use depends upon which audio processing you think is better and whether you are depending upon any special processing, such as room equilization, which your receiver can only do if fed the digital signal.

NOTE: Denon's universal players have a Denon proprietary connection called Denon-link which actually pre-dates I-link by a little bit. Due to industry tangles, Denon has not been able to get approval to transmit SACD over Denon-link. So Denon has had to enable I-link on it's players AS WELL -- it's a separate jack.

For DVD-A, you can get digital multi-channel or stereo output through HDMI.
Yes, DVD-A discs allow digital output through traditional digital connections -- optical, coax, and now also HDMI. However I believe some DVD-A discs use a form of copy protection which limits the bit rate down to something more like regular CD's over such digital links. The full bit rate for these DVD-A discs would only be present in an I-link connection, or, of course, if you let the player handle the decoding internally and just use the analog audio outputs.

The user manual discussions of this stuff are pretty confusing, but this certainly seems to be the case for both Denon and Pioneer Elite equipment.

SACD discs don't even allow this bandwidth limited version of the digital signal to be transmitted. You either get the full bandwidth via I-link or you have to use the analog audio outputs.
