I have been letting my co-workers borrow my "Smokin' Aces" combo, since it won't play anymore on the HD side for me. Anyway, I was explaining the "combos" and how the standard side will play in regular dvd players, PC's with DVD drives, and portable dvd players...

The one that took it home last night said, "...but I have Hi-Def component cables and a 720 HDTV, can't I play the HiDef side?"

This is so sad having to explain that HD DVD needs its own specific players, when they know Bluray is the schiznit and you have to have a $600 PS3 or $1,000 Bluray player for the good stuff.

I can't educate the masses alone people...A little help from Universal or Toshiba would help with more HD DVD commercials, trailers at movies, etc...Give me a T-shirt the the Spinning HD DVD logo at an angle on the front and www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com on the back in small print accross the shoulder blades. Put it all on black T's!!! SWEEEEET!

I, at least, got one free HD DVD from my wife's co-worker because she thought the HD DVD cases looked "prettier" than the regular DVD. Alas, it was Aeon Flux...

This has been my experience as well. People don't know what HD DVD players are. They think they already have it when they don't, just because they own an HDTV, or else they think an upconverting player is an HD DVD player. Otherwise they just think I'm really talking about Blu-ray.

Also, some people here think it refers to HDVD, which is type of bootleg DVD common from Asia.

I agree the masses need to be educated more, but it's gotta be hard with all of the new technology springing up everyday. If you don't care about it, nobody is going to MAKE you care about it.

Incidentally, I have both BD (PS3) and HD-DVD (HD-A2). My wife, who is about as technologically-illiterate as they come but who can appreciate good audio/video, will frequently say "wow, that's a great picture; is it blu-ray?", and 100% of the time when she says that, I'm watching HD-DVD. Not ONCE has she said "wow, that's a great picture" when I'm actually watching Blu-Ray. I don't know if it's the name or what, but it's a hill that I didn't think HD-DVD would actually have to climb.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I was telling a buddy that he could have my A1 for $200, and his brother pips up about how he could have his (Forget the manufacuter) Hd-DVD player for $100. The i said, thats not an HD-DVD player, only Toshiba has models out right now (Other than the 360 addon). Hes like, but it says it outputs in 1080i. I said yes, it upconverts standard DVDs to 1080i, but it wont play an HD-DVD disk. I just stopped fighting with him, and sadly he still thinks he has an HD-DVD player.

Actually he has an SD unponverting player as you said. He doesnt even have an "HD-DVD" player like the LP2 or Snazio models that will play HD material burned to a DVD. And he certainly does not have an "HD DVD" player. The terminology just adds to the problem. I think the best way to explain it is to refer to the file sizes of the movies and the amount of picture information in those files.

I think we are still 2-5 years away from the majority of the people having HDTV's...that puts HD-dvd about 5-10 years down the road.
I promise you there are more $49 VHS players in homes hooked to $199 27" tvs than there are DVD players hooked up to TV costing more than $500 bucks. we are NOT the norm

Isn't 2009 the deadline for everyone to convert to HDTV?

So, we're basically 2 years away from having sets in most (if not virtually all) households.

Whether or not DTV or downloadable movies will become the norm, I really can't say. But I'm mid 20s, and I prefer handling optical media. Maybe I'm just old school, but I like having the disks. I can imagine people older than me feeling the same way.

If prices of players/disks drop down to near the level of dvd, people will buy them & convert.

I'm guessing "common people" will think this way because of all the "available now on dvd & blu-ray" commercials. HD-DVD is high definition, but blu-ray's slogan is "beyond hd", so because of the marketing, in the back of their heads it's better. Possible?

I thought it was Jan 2009?

Quick article.

http://www.hdtv-news.co.uk/

The United States is set to go digital as of 2009, which had been great news for HDTV fans. Regulations are in place that will force all content providers to begin broadcasting in digital. In March of 2007, all televisions that were manufactured or imported into the country had to be HD ready. Those people not on-board the technology bandwagon are set to be shocked when their reliable old televisions no longer pick up any of their favorite shows.

I've read somewhere that they'll need a special converter or box if they don't convert to newer tvs. I could probably dig up an article, but info on the stuff is everywhere.

I posted this in an earlier thread. The local blockbuster has just started

renting HD-DVD and BD disks. The manager told me that half of the

people renting HD-DVD disks return them after discovering that they

don't play in their "high def" (=upscaling) DVD players. BD

did not have this problem.

That is correct. In 2009 we will go digital. This means Digital not HD. the only thing going away will be analog. This means for an analog tv to function they will have to have a converter. This converter will change the digital to analog. So anyone who does not get the converter will be out of luck. So basically all we are really doing is going back to the trusted and true cable company issued cable box.
woo hoo. Thats a big help to HD. lol.

Thanks for the clarification.

I agree with you, it's very depressing. If anything, you have to give it to Sony for building the Blu-Ray drive into the PS3. Nothing could ever educate the idiot masses like that did. I think MS really screwed up by not making the original Xbox have an HD DVD rom built in. Then they did it again with the Elite. I see virtually no advertising for HD DVD either maybe just a quick note at the end of a commercial for a DVD and it'll say "Also available on HD DVD".
