I could only tolerate watching it for about 5 minutes, but the picture and sound were very nice. Hopefully, it is a positive sign of things to come.

Hi everyone. I just bought my first HD Receiver, its a Dish Netowork 811. Im really enjoying it, but I have a few questions. I currently have: Discorvery, TNT, ESPN, HBO, Showtime and HDnet and HDmovies in HD. Do I need an OTA antenna connected to my receiver to pull the local HD channels or are they provided via my satelite connection? If I need one, what is good recommendation and how much are they? I live in Clearfield, will I be able to get a good signal? Also where is a good place to find a local HD programming guide. I dont know what or when is in HD locally. Any info would be appreciated.

As far as I know, Dishnetwork isn't providing local HD feeds yet, and just a guess won't be anytime soon.

I thought they had HD versions of the networks (CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox) but you get to pay extra for those.

Best bet would be an OTA antenna.

Dish Network's bandwidth is overused, and your picture would be better getting it locally.

As far as what is best for Clearfield, I'd go back and peruse the Salt Lake City threads, I remember a couple discussions about antennas for this area.

I know CBS's primetime is almost all HD, except news and reality shows.

Not sure on the other networks, as my only HD experience is here at work, can't quite afford to equip the homefront with HD yet.

I picked up a Silver Sensor at RC Willey and connected it to my Dish Network receiver. That is the only way im able to get local HD with Dish. Fox 13 is hit and miss, but everything else comes in at a minimum of 85% + signal strength 100% of the time. Im pretty impressed so far, and am considering VOOM. Has anyone had any experience with VOOM locally?

That seems to be the consensus regarding Fox.

Don't know what they are doing, but they need to fix it if they intend to keep viewers.

Hi,

Is anyone on this forum is affiliated with NBC (KSL) and knows how the HD telecasts will be broadcast? Will they be on the main channel or on a sub-channel?

Thanks!

Hello,

I have a Terk TV36 mounted on the mast in the attic at its highest point 40 miles away from the transmitters

strength varies from 35-50

unable to pick up FOX and NBC weak signal low 30's some pixelation

Any other options to increase the signal other than mounting the OTA on the roof?

I think most people over in the antenna/reception area would say you need a better antenna. (That's kinda your only option other than raising it higher.) I'm no expert, but I'd say you probably want something like a channelmaster 4228 - and perhaps - depending on the run from the antenna to the tuner - an amp like the 7777.

I know that it sucks to see that something half the cost of your terk will do a much better job, but go research it... However, be forewarned, Terk is a four letter word when asking about antennas over there. Or ask the guys at solidsignal.com. They reply pretty quickly (within a day) on stuff like that.

You don't need VHF for HDTV right now.

Now, with that said, move the antenna around too. I'm 45ish away from the towers and prior to placing it in my attic, moving my silver sensor antenna around just a few inches sometimes made a huge difference. However, my attic is above everything else around, so I have a line of sight view of the antennas and haven't had a dropout since putting it up there (on any channel).

Sometimes things that you would think would make reception worse will improve it. One report I read said that his VHF/UHF antenna didn't work properly until it somehow (accidentally) got dropped to the insulation in the attic, and then it worked perfectly, so he left it. So, YMMV...

If your house is made of stucco or brick, the outside of the home may be covered with a kind of chicken wire that will act like an electrical shield.

This happened to me in my new home with a planned antenna in the attic, and the only solution was to put the antenna on the roof.

Well.....

If you saw "Law and Order" tonight, it was through our new HDTV Frame Synchronizer and Dolby-E distribution. Looks (sounds) like it is all working, so, the Olympics feed will be in 1080i with DD5.1. NBC sent me some info that says much of the prime time programming will be HD and surround, starting in September.

It's 10:30 PM, and I got here at 4:30 AM, so I'm going home. Be back Friday night to see the Opening Ceremonies.

Ken,

Like many of us here, I'm interested in knowing more on what we can expect Friday and the Opening Ceremonies in HD! What's new with the frame synchronizer (yada) - is this different that what we've seen before from KSL broadcasts? Improved quality? Have we seen 1080i from KSL before?

Thanks!
