Sammy Color Wheel Whine

4271 Views 69 Replies 31 Participants Last post by  jedvik
Turned on my 3mos old HLN437 and can hear a high ptch whine from the color wheel. I know its the wheel not the fan since the whine stops when I shut the TV off, while the fan runs on for a while. What do you think call service immedietly before it fails or wait and see if it stops making noise over a few power cycle?

Thx

Call now, definitely a bad sign.

Jim
The only problem I've had with my Sammy 507 is the color wheel whine. The set used to be whisper quiet, but then the color wheel started to make a high pitched whine sound. A tech came out & said that it is definitely louder than normal. He is calling Samsung to see what should be done.

Jeff
My 507 also has the high pitched whine. The tech was out a couple of weeks ago with a lamp/ballast replacement, and he said it was the color wheel, but he thought it was normal to make that much noise. I went to BB and Sears to listen, and the were both very quiet, only audible if you put your ear up next to the front where the speakers are. Mine is noticeable from across the room, especially at low volume levels. Am considering another call to Samsung, as I have 3 months left on the warranty. Jeff, let me know what your tech decides to do with yours.
Michaelg299,

My color wheel was quiet, then it started intermittently making a pretty loud buzzsaw type noise, and the high pitched whine started after that.

The noise isn't real bad, except during quiet parts.

I made sure to tell the tech about the buzzsaw noises so that he could also tell Samsung about that. It is a known problem that they can fix.

I would call Samsung to tell them about the noise if it's irritating to you.

I'll post here what the tech finds out from Samsung.

I have the HLN507W. It is four months old and now there is a very noticeable, high-pitched noise which I believe is the color wheel. It seems to come and go. I could here it before, but now it gets loud at times. If I need service, should I use my Circuit City protection plan or use the one year Samsung warranty directly.
Mine did the same thing, yours is still under warranty, call samsung, they know it is a problem. They were very easy to work with and I recieved a whole new light engine with no diificulties!
If your color wheel is excessively noisy, it is defective, get it fixed under warranty.
I talked to the tech today, and Samsung is going to send out a new light engine to fix my color wheel noise. I'm glad I signed up for Samsung's 3 month warranty extension. I somehow doubt that Warrantech would be as accomodating if I was having this checked out under my extended warranty.

Jeff
That's the best thing about Samsung, they really stand behind their products.
My Tweeter extended contract has so far gotten me two light engines and soon to be a Digital Input board (what a waste of the $200 upgrade huh?) I just hope that my TV works correctly so that I do not need to see the Tweeter Tech for atleast 6 months.... Best $350 bucks that I spent so far

That's for sure. I won't hesitate to buy from Samsung in the future.

Jeff
Well, I believe my power buy HLM507w with board upgrade, has started the color wheel whine problem. About a week ago I noticed a high pitch whine that would start with the spinning-up noise just before the picture comes on and would stop as soon as the lamp shut off.

My set used to be whisper quiet. I would have to stick my head behind it to actually hear the fans. My husband says he can't hear this whine but the pitch is so high, it is driving me crazy. I only have a little over a week left on my 15 month Samsung warranty so I put a call into Samsung Customer Service this morning and have a sevice tech coming out next Tuesday.

I am so bummed because this set has been virtually problem free for me. Thank goodness I registered it online and got the 3 extra months on the warranty. If I purchase another set like this in the future, I will be sure to buy an extended warranty.

Is the fix for this usually a whole light engine replacement? I'm just praying I don't end up with a whole new set of problems.

The tech had originally told me that he would be bringing out a new light engine, but he arrived at my house with just the color wheel. It took him about an hour to do the repair. The new wheel isn't quite whisper quiet, but it is much quieter than the old one had become. Thank you Samsung!

Jeff
The sound is from a bad barring in the color wheel, I just had mine replaced.
My DLP is only a couple weeks old, I can hear it when I don't want to, like quiet scenes in movies ect.... Is this normal to hear somthing? It's not buzzing like some poeple say, but it hums a little.

Sounds normal, go to a store and compare it to one on display to confirm.

One cure for the noise of the color wheel is to turn up the volume on the HT receiver :)
Holy smokes! The tech that Samsung sent about my high pitched whine just left. I told him, that from my observation, that it is probably the infamous color wheel whine. I figure that the sets have been around long enough that he has probably seen this problem before. But no, the guy just laughs at me. He tells me that there is no color wheel in the set! Oh my lord, I'm thinking this guy doesn't have a clue.

He tells me it's probably the digital board, which I upgraded back in Oct., or the lamp. I tell him again that it is more likely the color wheel because I only hear the noise when it spins up. He laughs again and tells me that there is NO color wheel in there!

I go into the other room and get on the computer. I go the TI DLP video that expains how the DMD, lamp and color wheel work together in the set to create the picture. I tell the guy to come in and sit down and watch it. He goes, oh I didn't know that. Arrrrrrrrrrrrggghhh!

I then show him this thread about others here having the same problem. He admits that Samsung has not trained him how to work on these sets at all.

I beg him if he's going to order a board and lamp, to please order a color wheel too. He says he will talk to Samsung and see what they suggest.

Now I am skeeerrrred. I pray that Samsung will tell him the right information. With my set just days away from being out of warranty, I don't need new problems.

Samsung, please, please give some training to your authorized techs. At least explain to them how they work!

I'm sorry but ...... :D :D :D

That's scary and funny .
Wow servo ... that's scary! I live in the South Bay and sure wouldn't want to see that guy show up here for any repairs. Hopefully there are a number of trained techs in our area who can do a proper job ... at least by the time I might need them.

You should let Samsung know about your experience and make sure that they send somebody trained for your follow-up.
