Not sure if this is news to anyone, pardon the bandwidth if it's already known.

Taken from a T.W.I.C.E. email:

"Samsung Reveals 1080p DLP, CableCard Plans

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 5/28/2004 7:49:00 AM

New York - Samsung formally announced at Home Electronics Expo here that it will ship the industry’s first DLP rear projection HDTV set, based on Texas Instruments’ new xHD3 1080p Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) and Samsung’s specially developed fifth generation light engine design this fall.

Does it bother anyone the the CR spec for the 1080p announced here is 3000:1, rather than the 5000:1 figure that has appeared in all the previous preliminary info? This is only twice that of the 'base model' HD3 sets, and just slightly better than the 2500:1 CR of the HD2+ sets. This seems like a disappointing down-grade, or am I reading too much into 'specs'?

Don't know where the 5000:1 figure came from. The xHD3 was originally stated to have 3000:1 contrast.

In fact, that's at the DMD in lab conditions. I wonder how much reduced it is when integrated into an RPTV. In fact, are manufacturers claming for their TVs that the *DMD* has 3000:1 contrast, or the entire set?

Also, I have another question about contrast. It's said (on here, anyway) that we can only perceive up to around 700:1 contrast. Anyone have an explanation for that?

Yes, Doug, the 700:1 figure (one I doubt is even tested) is simultaneous or ANSI contrast -- what's on the screen at one moment. It's why people see jet black on, say, the Harry Potter checkerboard, even on a display with nothing resembling black... The white is so bright, it "anchors" the eye's response.

The 3000:1 figures are on off or sequential contrast. You have a scene in a cave, then one on a beach. In the cave, it's pitch black. On the beach, it's daytime. The range between those might be 10,000:1 or more. In real life, in a real cave, near a real beach, you are probably perceving tens of thousands to one. On a display with 3000:1 contrast, you are getting near the point of being to reproduce reality, but you aren't there.

I have believed that xHD3 is not as good at on-off contrast as HD2+. If the former is really only 3000:1 in the lab, then my suspicions are correct. HD2+ can deliver 3000:1 in a projector -- in fact, it has done better.
