Samsung 30 " Model 3080 vs. 3082?

542 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Ikabob
I am looking at 2 new TVs....I like the built in HD tuner of the Samsung 3080 . Also, the 3082 just came in . I like the smaller size of the 3080 (speakers on bottom) . It looks like both are exactly alike in features but the 3082 has an extra HMDI port( I really don't need another one) Can anyone tell me is there a big difference in reliability etc between the 2? Is Samsung a good company (I have more experience with Toshibas) ? 30" is perfect for the room I want it in. Thank you for your responses.

Many people have said that Samsung has addressed a lot of the complaints about geometry with the SlimFits, and that the 3082 seems to have fewer geometry issues than the previous iterations of the model (3080, 3079, etc). But, the 3080 is no slouch, either.

I'd say that both TVs are going to be very similar in terms of PQ, and that I would base my decision on a) the space available to put the TV (the 3080 is narrower), b) the need for a second HDMI, c) how returnable either of them will be, just in case, and d) the price. In that order.

A lot of people have lamented the decision not to make a "bottom speaker" model of the 3082, and opt for th 3080 instead, if they can find it. Locally, I can still get the 3080, but the stores only keep the 3082 on the floor and in-store stock.

Beware the nay-sayers that might show up and tell you to get an Insignia because they hate Samsung. They're just an example of the "good experience will only get relayed to 3 people, a bad experience will get relayed to 30". I doubt that the unfixable geometry issues they will claim are a "plague" really affect more than about 2-3% of sets.

I am quite happy with my 3080.

Speakers on the bottom lets the picture go from edge to edge, so it lookes bigger (IMHO), and the decreased width let it fit in the space I had available.

I don't watch much ESPN or the like with rolling tickers that seem to show the geometry problem more, but the few times I've surfed through, it looked fine.

I also aren't lucky enough to have an XBOX 360 that also seems to show off the geometry problems more, but my old fashioned PS2 looks pretty good, albeit in a 4x8 box in the middle of the screen.

If speaker placement is important, I'd say try the 3080,

if it has big problems, take it back and try the 3082 or another brand.

Id go for the 3082, I have had mine for about a little over a week and have had no complaints. The speakers on the side really dont affect me plus im not sure what the 3080 had but the 3082 does come with 2 HDMI inputs. Also target has them onsale right now for $699 the 3082, while BB and CC have them for $899, get CC to price match it and 10% the difference and you are going to get one heck of a deal.

Thank you alll very much for your responses. I had the 3080 at home for a while.....then I went in to check out the 3082. While playing with the 3082 remote, I found that the 3082 had a function that allowed me to pull the screen down or raise it up in the ZOOM mode. The 3080 did not have this and it was an issue with me because in the Zoom 1 mode the tops of the heads were cut off slightly. That was annoying and so the 3082 seemed to be the one for me. H.,H. Greg was very cooperative on my returning the 3080 (after 3 days) and exchanging evenly for the 3082. When I got home I did see that there were other feature differences. The virtual Surround Sound, quicker channel setup, and some others. The shifting up and down in Zoom1 is very nice for me, but....everytime you change the channel you must reset the up or down location....to bad it just doesn't stick from channel to channel. Maybe that will be a downloadable update some day. Oh yes, I also found that the 3082 has no S-video on the back, instead it has 2 HDMIs. I think, in my short time of playing with the 3082, that my comments are correct,. If anyone has additions or corrections, please chime in. Also, I did not find much (any) warping or geomertry problems with the 3082....but after you guys brought it to my attention I did see concavities with the 3080. At this time , I am very happy with the 3082 and am glad I exchanged...I did like the bottom speakers and narrowness of the 3080 though. Thanks again.
