I think it is relative to your situation. How much is $500 worth to you. The Sony in my opinion is much, much better. If you're hurting for cash right now with the economy is then stay with the Samsung. If you got the cash and are just woundering if it's worth it the answer is Yes! without a doubt.

If you shop arround some more you might be able to find the gap close a little.

The only reason the Sony would be worth the difference is if you find the screen of the Samung too glossy. If not they are both great sets with the Samsung being the better deal price/performance wise.

Well CNET tested both sets and found the XBR6 to be slightly better overall. The XBR6 with slighty deeper blacks. The A650 with more accurate color. Honestly, at the end of the day it's about the glossy or semi-gloss screen.

FWIW, I think the Sony offers a slightly better pic in just about every regard (the techs I've talked to said both are virtually spot-on color-wise when properly calibrated, so I have no idea where cnet comes up with this stuff, although the sony definitely offers deeper blacks) not to mention I think they're (Sony's) altogether constructed more soundly.

Good luck,

James

Hmmm.....from the professional reviews I have read the Samsungs have better blacks that rival the Kuro. Also, where do you come up with the constructed more soundly stuff. Be specific and give real examples of specific component differences and manufacturing process differences that make the Sony better. Otherwise we might think you are just making it up

they get this stuff by thoroughly testing the sets, both objectively and subjectively. read and compare the specifics of the reviews and the Geek Box at the end with some of the objective test results.

then go to their explanation of how they test and read up exactly what they do with each and every set. it's actually quite impressive.

and then realize that 99.9% of all the sets are reviewed by the one guy David Katzmaier, so that the subjective stuff can be easily filtered, once you read enough of the reviews, for his likes and dislikes, generally where he is coming from. then you can make your own assesment.

realize also that the 'calibration' that they do uses only the user settings that we all can access. their rationale is that most people will not do a professional calibration using the service menus. in addition, the calibration they do is in a totally dark environment, and likely won't suit those with lighter viewing rooms.
