model # SP61l2hx

i recently bought one of these, and to cut a long story short i watch a lot of horror and sci-fi movies and basically in the dark scenes the black is way too grey despite all my efforts with a "dvd essentials" disc and playing with the brightness contrast etc.

i rang the place i purchased it off and they said samsung have a special backdoor that enables you to tweak the black settings more with the contrast etc etc. has anyone heard of this or is this just going to be a limitation of this set?

normal bright scenes look great, but it really does make watching a dark horror movie/sci-fi in a room with the lights off pretty unworkable (and lets face it there lots of dark horror films :) ) and this is pretty much 95% of my dvd collection :(

plasma's problems (Dead pixels, etc) made me tend toward an lcd.

thanks for any info :)

Dead pixels in plasma occur during manufacturing, either you have them on day 1 or you dont have any. LCD pixels problems can develop over time. LCD is well known to have the worst black compared with CRT, LCOS, DLP or plasma. You bought the wrong technology for your needs. Can you exchange it to something else. If not, Back lightning can improve the perceived black level of your display.

I was a little disappointed in the black level of my HLP6163, since I also have a SharpVision 12K PJ. The Sharp has excellent black levels. I wonder if internal reflections in the RPTV cabinet are degrading the black level?

People have speculated about lining the inside with Duvatyne --I did that on my previous CRT RPTV.

Oh, and I also see rainbows A LOT with the Samsung, whereas I only rarely see them on my PJ.

Darrell,

I'd like to hear more about this Duvatyne you mentioned. What exactly is it? What experience did you have with it and your CRT? I'm curious about lining the inside of my GWIII to improve black levels.

Duvatyne is a black fabric, mainly used in the theater to black out areas of the stage. It has very low reflectivity, and for that reason is nice for lining the inside of an RPTV box. Most people use a spray on adhesive. People who had Mits boxes have done this a lot, since it's so easy to take the screen off.

I found a local theater supply company and bought some used material from them. Got more than enough, but sold my left over to someone else in the area who was doing the same to their Mits. Wished I'd kept it now...

I just wondered if anyone had taken the screen of their Samsung HLP yet.

hi,

basically i think i'm going to have to take it back and exchange for another and refund if necessary.

so i guess my question is given i can't live with watching horror movies in a dark room where the blacks are greys, what would people recommend?

how much better at blacks is dlp/plasma. my previous straight rear projection was quiet acceptable at blacks but had other issues (not 100hz etc).

a lot of peopel seem to say plasmas don't last and that's why gettign a 5 year warranty on them costs 3* more then lcd etc.

thanks!
