I would say if you plan to use it for mainly for Blu ray the 1400 would be better than the 1200. Dolby TrueHD is where it is at! Upconverting you have a case for the 1200 though. I plan to end up with the 2400 for my theater but will still give the 1400 a good workout...

Some good news and bad news.

The Good: Samsung has a new firmware upgrade available to download via the player's Lan input. I was able to download it and install it without any problems. Only thing it seemed to change was the response time from the remote inputs. Other than that, I have no idea what it offers, but I did throw in a Fox title immediately.

The Bad: Sure enough, it still does not allow for bitstream passthrough. Only got the DTS core soundtrack on Flyboys. I guess this might confirm that this will only be available on the 2400 model.

The Ugly: I haven't had time to experiment with any more discs, but I do hope the FW upgrade fixed some issues with disc loading. I put in the BD torture test disc, Pirates of the Caribbean and it took an eternity to load. And it seemed random with other discs, all varying from snappy to almost unbearable. I'll post again later with any other findings.

It would make sense that the 2400 has the HBR passthrough since it is coming out a little bit later. I would hope they would offer a firmware to make the 1400 do the same...

I'm like Joe. I'd really like to know if the 1400 will do the bitstream. I already have the XA2 for my standard DVD playback and don't need the upconversion ability of the 2400. If I have to spend the extra money for the 2400 to get bitstream I guess I will.

After I do some extensive playtime with the 1400 I will post some observations... Hopefully in the next couple of days...

Joerod, I'd like to read about your results as well. It'd be interesting to compare our findings. In the meantime, I'd like to share more of my own experiences with the player so far. I've also added a few quick pics of the player and accessories. Below is a brief list of some player tidbits.

Unit is fairly light (built more like an A20 than an XA2)

Made in China

Flimsy tray

A tad noisy during loading. Laser pickup makes high pitch sound. Nothing significant.

Extremely quiet during playback. I couldn't hear the fan at all, even up close.

Still has problems with some discs at menu screen. Might be a java issue. Takes you to menu screen, but doesn't let you highlight any options.

Player speed:

From off to tray eject - 20 sec

Avg load time until picture appears on screen - 20-25 sec

Still very slow for the POTC movies - 60 + sec to load

Scan speeds and chapter skipping is still a bit sluggish. Comparable to the Sony S300. Not nearly as fast or smooth as the PS3.

Will resume playback if stopped, but will reload and start over if ejected from the player.

Leaving the audio output at bitstream will allow for DTS and DD decoding through the receiver and will automatically switch to PCM uncompressed audio when selected on the disc.

Still no bitstream passthrough for TruHD or DTS-MA decoding yet, if ever.

Greetings,

Don't hold your breath. Samsung has stated that they do not release upgrades to provide upgrades but only to provide fixes. Unless it is previously stated that the 1400 will be upgraded to decode DTS-HD MA then it more than likely won't be.

I have the 1200 and love it's picture quality. It does have some issues that should have been addressed by now but haven't. I look forward to seeing what the 2400 looks like.

Regards,

Can you tell us if this player resumes playback if stopped on the POTC discs?

It does not resume. It basically loads up from the beginning as if it was ejected and and put in again, which is very annoying to say the least.

You people need to understand this is an authoring issue and not a player issue.
