My brother has a Samsung DLP, I don't know the model number but it's maybe 2-3 years old and it's 1080p. Anyway, the picture looks extremely washed out, and the blacks look really grey. It looks like if you went into the menu on a tv and turned the brightness all the way up. I know it's not his tv settings, I checked his settings, and it's not a wire, because it shows the same with many sources. Do any of you know what the problem may be? Could he need a new bulb?

Also note the brightness settings and black level adjust seem to do almost nothing, whether you have it all the way up or all the way down.

Let’s start at the beginning. When you try to turn on the tv, do you hear any strange noises coming from the back of the tv? Have you cleaned the inside of your tv in the last 6 moths? My first instinct is the color wheel, how ever try and press the menu on your remote when the tv is turn on, check if the excessive brightness also affects the tv menu, if not we can discard the DMD board, and last when cleaning the inside of the tv check the digital board for any swollen capacitors, if you find any replace them. Good luck.

I never heard the tv come on, he always has it on when I go there. Like I said, it's MY BROTHER'S TV. The whole picture is messed up, menus and all. He's never cleaned the inside of the tv, and I'm not a tech so I have no idea what a DMD board or how to check for swollen flux capacitors.

I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at that. Swollen flux capacitors!

Maybe have your brother join the forum, so we could talk directly to him.

He's not a videophile like I am. All I can tell you is, if you turn the brightness all the way down, and black adjust on high, the blacks are still really grey and not even half as good as they're supposed to be. Yes I know black adjust is supposed to be off, I turned it on high to see if the blacks could get blacker and they won't. The tv just can't physically get black no matter what settings you use.

I know this is a three year old thread, but I just recently had the same issue. The tv's menu when looked on a black screen have and aura around them. As she said it looks like you turned the brightness up all the way. Funny thing is I just changed the lamp and had an outstanding picture for approx. 30 min. I don't really think it is the color wheel but probably the DMD board. I also cleaned every exposed lens and the dlp chip itself. Please advise, if it is the board, I guess I may just use it as an excuse to buy a new tv.
