Samsung DLP Question

1556 Views 18 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  rgrossman
I do not think that this question has been asked before or at least I have not been abler to find the answer so far.

I have a 50" plasma display ion my main viewing room. it is mounted high enough to keep it away from the prying little hands of the kids. However, I have a need for a set for the family room. Although I want a 42 or 43 inch flat screen for that room as well, the display will be within reach of the kids.

Is a DLP display fairly resistant to cleaning solvents? I have to assume that the kids are likely to get some dirty fingerprints on the screen and I will want to be able to clean them off. Plasma displays do not fair will as far as cleaning them is concerned and I have in fact never rum anything other than an anti-static cloth over mine.

Also, how does DLP fair in bright sunlight? There is a bank of bay windows behind the seating position that the display will be directly across from.

Finally, are the Samsung DLPs' HDCP compliant?

Thanks in advance.

- I don't know about solvents, but the screen is fairly easy to clean. Maybe someone else can answer what types of solvents are acceptable.

- It is a very bright set. My main viewing room has 20' glass walls on both sides and it works well in that situation. I don't know how it will fare if the windows are behind the TV - but probably as well as any TV you can find.

- Yes

There is not such thing. :)

I don't think so. Here is what a lot of people do:

If you are cautious then try a micro fiber cloth. Dry if possible and damp, not wet, if you need heavier cleaning. Micro fiber is the cloth that comes with new glasses and it wont scratch. You can wash it but be sure to stay away from anything that would leave a residue in the fabric. I did a slow search of the RPTV forum and got 58 hits on microfiber so you can probably find some testimonials in that group. It's available in auto supply stores in sizes more appropriate for wide screen TVs. Here are some links.

Pretty good if the sun isn't shinning directly on the screen. If you look at one in the stores that go into very bright lighting like CC or BB you can get a pretty good idea.

Yes.
With their narrow vertical viewing area you can't really put a non-glare screened DLP set high enough to get it out of reach.

Mr. htwaits: please forgive me if this has already been asked before, but I notice that for location you and Mr. Rogo both mention Palo Alto. Do your paths ever cross?

What's with the "Mr."? :)

Yes they do but, so far, never at the same time.
Mr. htwaits

Yes you should get Mr. status after all you put into this forum.

Or wait how about Professer Waits or High preist Waits or Your honor Waits or hey maybe you should be the governer or the president, yeah thats it .

I have mine in a room with 3 4'x9' windows to the side and 3 4'x9' windows directly across from the set. They are North and West facing so I don't get direct sun through the windows. Very little reflection and great light output in a bright room (I had to turn down brightness). That is the primary reason I got the 4365. All of the other sets I looked at reflected a lot of the surroundings in the showrooms.

Why not President. :D ... and I'm qualified for the job. All I do is pass on what my "advisers" tell me.

I wouldn't want to be Governor in California. The job has no class anymore.

I don't watch much TV anymore and I refuse to watch movies on a dinky 27" TV so that leaves AVS Forums. Where would I be without it? ;)

Mr. htwaits: Has the AVS forum ever interviewed Presidential candidates about video issues before? Do you think it would be a good idea? I believe you would make a great president beacuse you know alll the threads and are always slow to advocate radical action and try not to offend people--that's more than you can say about all the people who are currently running.

Thank you. I expect that with these recommendations I will be appointed. My first action in office will be to ban side mounted speakers and dithering.

I think you'd need a constitutional amendment to ban side-mounting.:D

You've caused me to reevaluate my position. Should I be appointed I shall decline.

You can't be a politician, htwaits, because you don't have enough (or any) weasel in you. Besides, do you really want to have to deal with accusations of caving to special interest groups after that first action and then for the rest of your term?
See above.
Gee, adding a video plank to the platform would give 'Progressive Politics' a whole new meaning! ;)
Mr. htwaits

The world would like to know should you be elected, how you feel about AV Warming and just what you intend to do about it , as the current administration is a miserable failure.

Hey you said side mounting and dithering :D

My wife loves it when I start dithering, she just gets (cough) ah, well nevermind.

Jim
Let me set the record straight.

I was only willing to serve if appointed but have already withdrawn my services.

As far as your " (cough) ah, well never mind" goes, more power to your wife. :)

Now, back the the regularly scheduled program.

Is 'side mounting' the same as 'getting something on the side'? I could never find an appropriate port there... (hehehe)
Try one of the "Angels in America"--they have eight "ports" (though I haven't figured out exactly where).
