I just had the upgrade performed this afternoon on my HLM507W.

Now I want to take advantage of the discrete codes, but I need to get some info on remotes, because I haven't done any shopping for one.

There seems to be two possible solutions, one is to get an expensive programmable remote that hooks up to a computer... and another apparently is to rig up some kind of connector to certain brands of remotes?

I'm having a hard time searching through that gigantic DLP upgrade thread to find specific brands of remotes to use, and would appreciate any information I could get from you guys.

I'm just looking to explore various options, and I really don't want to spend a ton of money, though if it is the best solution, that is what I will do.

I think the best place to start is http://www.remotecentral.com/. I bought the Harmony remote ( http://www.harmonyremote.com ) and am quite thrilled with it. It controls everything that I've got (one minor frustration on the TiVo though), including the discrete commands on my HLN507W. Harmony also has a new remote (less expensive, I think its $199) that I probably would have bought if they had come out about 6 weeks ago.

OK, how about a price range, that you are looking to spend for one. As there are MANY options, when it comes to buying a universal remote.

Do you like buttons, or a touch screen?

Do you prefer that it programmable by using a PC or not? Prices can range anywhere from $70 or so, to into the high hundreds.

Something like a MX-500 is a very good choice, if you prefer having buttons, with the option of later adding a way to program it with a PC. Even better yet is a MX-700, if you need more than what a MX-500 can do. And then there are various touchscreen Pronto models to chose from, with color screens even in the higher end models.

As mayest suggested. Go to www.remotecentral.com and read some of the tests and reviews on remotes they have there. And see if there is any one remote, that for some reason catches your fancy, and then ask a few question about it if you have any, in their forums they have there.

Very low hundreds is about as much as I am willing to spend, and I think I would definitely prefer buttons.

I'll check out that site, thanks guys!

Then I'd recommend a MX-500, as you can get them for just a few dollars under $100 ($98). And it can control up to ten devices, and you can do "macro" commands with it also.

And if later on you need to have PC programming for it, you can buy the hardware and software from www.irclone.com to program it with a PC.

The thing is, I'm needing the PC programming for it right now, since there is no Samsung remote (that I know of) with the discrete codes I'm looking for.

It looks like the MX-700 is the way to go.

Don't walk past Radio Shack too fast. Depending on your needs, R/S offers cheap, easy solutions.

I bought the 2116 ($30), and it controls my audio and direcTivo receivers, TV, DVD and CD players, and could control my cable box and house amp if I knew the set-up codes for those two.

Thanks to discrete buttons and simple macros, the touch of two buttons changes all my devices to play a DVD or CD, or watch a satellite movie or HDTV sporting event.

I was a little intimidated by the the jp1 project at first, but it's actually quite fun once you get the hang of it and you can't really mess up the remote.

Clearly if your needs are substantial or you don't have the WAF to consider, one of the more sophisticated remotes may suit your needs better. But I've owned both the fancy HTI and the fancy Marantz R/Cs and I like the 2116 so much I'm gonna buy another one for the bedroom system.

I agree with jhstn58, I have the Radio Shack 2116 and really like it. The backlight buttons are great. And, messing around and reprogramming it with the JP1 connector is kind of fun. You can easily program it through the PC until you get teh custom configuration you want. You can also easily upgrade it to control new devices using a spreadsheet keymap master.

(For lots of info, check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/ and http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/ )

Also, for any of these remotes, you can probably get people here to send you their files that have teh discreet codes programmed in.

It's possible to get Samsung's discrete codes loaded into any learning remote by going the JP1 route. For example, use a PC to upload Samsung's codes to a JP1 programmable remote, and then use that remote to "teach" a non-PC programmable remote such as an MX-500.

That said, I really love the ease of programming my MX-700. It's a much simpler solution than the JP1 route, and it makes incremental changes to your remote configuration very easy.

If you decide to go this route, I'd recommend shopping on e-bay. New MX-700's can be found there for about $180. Just be sure you get a package that includes a cable. Software can be downloaded directly from Universal Remote's website.

This might be a safer way to buy a MX-700 for a lower price, over going the ebay route for one.

As either way you won't get a warranty from Home Theater Master on the remote.

I have an older Radio Shack model 1994 that so far has been able to control every device I've needed it to, including some that weren't on the market when it was. The presently available versions of this remote are well worth looking at.

Now I have a new Samsung HLN5065 and will be getting the upgrade that provides discrete codes. If someone would simply post the 3 digit codes for each of the Samsung inputs I'd be able to store them in my 1994 directly, without bothering to get the JP1 kit. Do the newer RS remotes have that capability ?

Please post the codes or a link to where they can be found. Thanks.

That will work only if those 3 digit codes are already built in and supported by that remote. If they are not, then you will have to go the JP1 route to add them. The newer Radio Shack remotes, have a lot of codes that were left out. Even though the package they come in states otherwise, and the JP1 stuff is how you can add them back in.

FWIW, here are the EFC codes for the discrete inputs:

Antenna\t251

Video 1\t177

Video 2\t013

Video 3\t017

S-Video 1\t192

S-Video 2\t019

S-Video 3\t175

Component 1\t171

Component 2\t016

Component 3\t179

DVI\t018

PC\t073

Also, attached is the text file version of my DLP keymaster codes. If you're up on jp1, you should be able to simply change the remote you're using, then customize your button configuration before loading it to IR.

Thank you '58 - they work like a charm with the RS 1994 remote. Selected the TV device (which was set to be a Samsung ) then used the 'magic' key folowed by the input code and bingo- discrete input codes. Now to see if I can associate the ones I use with individual keys and then include them in macros.

Does anyone have the discrete codes for On and Off? I have the inputs working just fine, but I can't seem to find the three digit codes for discrete On and discrete Off.

I don't get anything when I try to follow your download link. I am set to experiment with the JP1 stuff...
