I didn't see a thread but have one coming soon so I thought this would be a good place to start

Very interested in seeing what others are doing with there projectors.

What tools are being used to tweak?

Recommendations for setup?

Etc..

Thanks

How close are you sitting from the screen?

That was my question as well. I'm 13' from a 110" Carada BW and see no SDE at all.

comming from CRT screen door was a concern for me, but from where I sit it isn't! Rainbows on the oher hand can get annoying.

Are you happy with the Carada? I am seriously considering one. I know Stewart is highly recommended, but it doesn't fit my budget ;)

Right now I am projecting on the wall. I know it's less than ideal, but it still blows away the image the my local multiplex offers :)

According to Dave Abrams who works at Joe Kane Productions, the Studiotek 130 is the desired screen for this projector, I believe over 90"? Anyway, after much research, I found out that the BW is pretty much identical to the Studiotek for quite a bit less. That being said, I'm very happy with the Carada, and have no regrets at all. Nice people to do business with as well. Very customer oriented.
He's gotta be pulling our leg about SDE, don't you think?. DLP doesn't do SDE, at least not what most people call SDE.

How bad are the rainbows, Jay? I've had a Sharp 9000 for 4 years and haven't seen a rainbow in 3 years. If I'm used to DLP projectors and don't see them now, will I see them with the Samsung? I think the last time I saw one was in the movie 'The Man Who Wasn't There', a beautifully photographed black and white film that seemed designed to make DLP look bad.
My Samsung should be arriving soon and I had a few questions about setup and best viewing:

1. Does anyone use DNIe? Any caveats for using this feature?

2. How aggresively are you using the lens shift? It looks like there is some lumens drop off when using this but my screen is low and I'll probably have to use.

3. How are you able to get into the service menu? Any recommended tweaks there?

4. Which light settings are folk using - theater or bright?

5. Any recommendations for using a PC over the DVI port? I have an Nvidia 6600GT

6. Is anyone using this projector with a Monoprice HDMI switcher?

7. Are there any apps to take advantage of the RS-232C port?

8. Anyone use AVIA for calibrating? Any caveats?

Let me see if I can answer some - It's not like I'm busy watching anything.....

1- Dnie looked okay on some material. Aside from a slight sharpening, It tends to blow out whites and crush blacks - Can be used to make less contrasy films pop a bit more - Use at your own discression.

2 - Lens shift seemed to not degrade the image like my Z2 used to (though that had H & V lens shift)

4- I tended to use bright but this is the first projector I've owned that didn't look worse in low bulb setting. Good for getting better blacks. I have an 80 inch grey goo but I still tend to like it bright as possible image.

6 - I have the monoprice 5 port HDMI with EQ - works perfectly.

4- For me, Bright is essentially unusable due to noise. YMMV.
1-Haven't tried DNiE

2-Have mounted my PJ twice. First time (head whacking level) with little shift, now higher with full vertical shift. No apparent difference in picture quality. No keystoning at either position, of course, which would no doubt degrade the image.

3-No idea regarding the service menu. I'm just hoping not to have to use the service department.

4-Have been using Theater exclusively. Plenty bright in a light-controlled room with a 110" Carada brilliant white screen and 75 hours bulb life.

5-I have my computer (Mac Mini) hooked up via the PC port and not via DVI. Flawless image--just like a giant LCD. I'm still blown away by what I see from the PC. Note that I am not using it for video (other than peeking at trailers via the Mac's Front Page interface occasionally).

8-I tried to use DVE to calibrate, but ended up with an image that I liked less that what the out of box presets (Movie1) had to begin with. So I gave it up, and am extremely content with what I see.

Mine is scedule for delivry soon too.

What is the best installation position for this PJ...to install further or more close to the screen, centered ?

I know that certain projector optic are more accurate when its close to the "zoom max" position, others close to the position "zoom min" and others in the center...
Movie 1 for color

Movie 2 for black and white
If you are seeing noise it's probably set to gamma mode 2. Try gamma mode 1 with bright bulb setting.
