I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a Samsung 4674. Unfortuantely I cannot see one for myself since no stores in my area stock it. I'm wondering about some issues that were brought up here.

* Does the 4674 have any of the audio sync problems that have been widely reported in other Samsung DLPs? I run my digital audio (DVD, Cable Box) direct into my receiver bypassing the TV entirely. I am very sensitive to audio sync issues. Should I be worried?

* I have never seen rainbows on any DLP in the stores, though admittedly I haven't watched for more than a few minutes at a time. Should I worry that I might see rainbows on the 4674? Is there a comparable TV that I can look at in the stores to be reasonably assured that I won't see them? I've not seen them on the 5085 or 5063 but I understand they have a 7-segment color wheel.

* Can anyone come up with a persuasive argument to go with the JVC D-ILA 52Z575 instead? This set is a very close #2 on my list.

I have had a 4674 since early Nov. so I can tell you my experience with the set.

Audio sync: This is of course a function of the program being viewed. I have seen sync issues on 2 DVD's, but was able to use the sound delay feature of my AV receiver to get rid of it. I would recommend using a 720P up-converting DVD player via DVI or HDMI to minimize this issue. It has been reported most when the input signal was 480i. Also I have DNie off which should help this as well. I have not noticed any audio sync on HD programing, except when it is a known problem with the channel (i.e. DiscoveryHD on D*)

Rainbows: I never saw a rainbow in the store. Got the set home in a room with reduced lighting and saw rainbows. I have found that increasing the ambient light while watching the set reduced eye strain, and virtually eliminated the rainbows. I might see 1 a week, watching 2+ hours per day. Your experience will vary. Also I can see rainbows on the 7 segment sets if I try/look for them. For me 7 seg is no different than 6 seg. If you want a good test to see if you will ever see a rainbow, try this. Get a DVD that has the THX optimizer on it (Star Wars has it I think) and go to the screen that has the white circle on the black background. Look at the right edge of the circle, then quickly shift your focus to the left edge, then back to the right. I can see rainbows big time every time I try this regardless of the ambient light. If you don't see them doing this, I doubt you ever would. And as I said before, even though I can see them if I try I almost never do while just watching the set.

JVC D-ILA: I have not really looked at these, they would not fit in my space which is only 41" wide.

Overall I have been very happy with my HLP4674 and the HLN467W I had before it. Good luck with your decision.

I just got my 4674 on Thursday, so I'll be fairly brief.

#1 - Haven't noticed these yet, though I have seen some reports that it can happen. Turning off DNIe (a good idea anyway) supposedly helps.

#2 - No rainbows here, though I haven't intentionally gone looking for them. I didn't see any in stores, either,.

#3 - If you have room for a 52" D-ILA, you might look at the 5674 instead of the 4674. The 5674 is only .4" wider than the52Z575, .5" taller, and a little deeper, but it's got a 4" larger screen size. I went with the 4674 because I've got a 41.8" wide opening, which it fits into beautifully.

FWIW,

I have the HLP5674 and I've seen no audio sync issues w/ a 480i from my DVD player (a non-progressive scan but w/ component video Pioneer DV414 circa '99)

Nor have I had any audio sync issues w/ my DVR (tested across all possible formats 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i) w/ component video and HDMI or my S-VHS over S-video (480i)

The DVD and DVR both use Digital Audio to Audio Receiver and VCR uses RCA to Audio Receiver.

My exprerience with the 5674:

1. Audio delay: I definitely see an audio sync issue while feeding 480i to the TV from a Sony DVD/VHS combo. If I engage the progressive mode for DVD, no delay. Observed with both S-Video and component inputs. I conclude that 480p is the minimum pre-processing required for this TV fto have no noticeable image delay on the sound. With 480i, the delay does create a very noticeable reverb effect if both TV and receiver speakers are active, as well as observable lip synch issue.

While this is somewhat lame from a modern TV, it's a non-issue for me since my cable box spits 720p and all my other sources are at least 480p.

2. Rainbows: I saw a couple of rainbows on 63 series in stores, none on 74 (ironically)... but I see them at home, pretty easily. As a matter of fact, it's the only serious flaw I would find to this TV after 2 months of use. My understanding is that for those sensitive to rainbows, and f300v10's test is a great suggestion, you'll see them with all current single chip microdisplays. 7 vs 6 colors won't matter (still same R-G-B effective refresh rate), and the 20% faster color wheel in 85 and 63 series will only reduce the rainbow spread by this much - they'll still be plenty visible unless you were right at the rainbow visibility threshold. In my case, ambient light doesnt help unless excessive (I like it movie-theater dark), and my last hope is to turn the gamma setting to 0 as someone suggested it also helps with rainbows - (I don't see why it should though). Actually, my real plan is heavy drinking and early senility so vision senses slow down a bit :)

While I see those occasional rainbows, this TV is the one I would buy again if I had not already, HDTV pic is stunning and HTPC potential is best to date.

As someone else pointed out the Samsung HLP5674 is hardly any bigger than the JVC. But, the HLP5674 has a large center speaker shelf out back so it does not slope down steeply behind the top bezel.
I've got a 43.5" shelf; the JVC would just barely make it, with the edges of the TV sticking out a bit. The 5674 woudln't fit, and besides, I sit about 8 feet away and watch a good amount of SD so 56" may be too big.

I am finding it hard to justify 6" less screen space, and more money, for the 4674, plus I'm worried that I'll start seeing rainbows ;) But the 4674 would fit perfectly in my space and at 8 feet viewing distance should still be a nice improvement over my 27" CRT.

I'm curious about your experience with the JVC; to my eyes it had a bright, silky picture. It was softer than the Samsung but not as soft as the HD3 DLPs (which to my eyes are clearly inferior). I guess I have to visit more stores and take a closer look.

I have a 5674, should be the same issues, got it in NOvember.

I've had some audio sync issues when running the audio straight from a standard def Tivo box to a receiver, the TV lags behind the audio. High Def DirecTV box eliminated that problem.

Rainbows - I desperately tried to see them in stores, shook my head, moved my eyes all over the place, and NEVER saw any, even in several different stores. DIdn't see them for about a month after I got the set. Now I see them all the time when viewing material that is mostly dark, such as many scenes in Lord of the Rings - Return of the King. I see them when I move my eyes or blink, so it happens a lot. It is most obvious when there is a mostly black screen with a white title, as in the beginning of a movie. It's annoying, but I still like the set. Maybe when they come out with a three-chip DLP TV I'll think about upgrading, but that's not going to be anytime soon.
