The specs, for whatever they're worth, indicate a lower contrast ratio for the 79. I haven't compared myself, but I'd be surprised if it were brighter using the same settings.

There is no compression on the 88. It does have overscan enabled by default, but you can turn it off in the service menu. With overscan off, you get full 1:1 pixel mapping of 1080 content, but you still do get a little cropping around the edges. I'd be shocked if the 79 didn't do this as well.

I think you'll need to wade through the threads on various sets to get a a sense of what the pros and cons are. I went with the 88 b/c the DLP w/colorwheel seemed to be a proven technology and I didn't want to take the risks associated with being an early adopter of DLP w/LED technology.
The only problem is that even though I didn't see rainbows in the store, I do see them at home. LED technology changes colors faster than colorwheel technology, so rainbows should be less of an issue.
I'll probably switch to LCOS or DLP w/LED when I feel those technologies have matured.

I have seen both units on display and I do think IMO, that the 79 series with the new LED lighting system does look a little better in PQ and brightness. But obviously, there is no 61" in that series. |
