No. There is no way to update the old HLN series with new HLP or HLR internals. This includes the digital board, light engine or analog board. There are new form factors and overall design considerations that do not allow this upgrade to happen.

Damn...that's too bad. I guess I should have thought of that before I made the purchase.....oh well. *sigh*

Thanks for the info.
jim,

The best you could do with the HLN models would be to have it "upgraded" to the W1 model. I had that done on my old HLN model to combat the lip sunc issue. Unfortunately, that was the third repair on the set... and two more issue popped up after that. For the record, they changed the lip sync fix kit after I had mine done. Mine included a full guts replacement of digital board, analog board and light engine. They reduced it back to just the digital board (I believe) afterwards. To my eyes, my PQ wasn't much better post-upgrade and the lip sync issue was still there. After the fifth repair to this set, Samsung offered me a replacement and I took them up on it. I am now enjoying an HL-P5685 which I can not say enough good things about. FWIW, I DID have to pay the difference from the 6163 that they wanted to replace my set with and the 5685. Considering my happiness now...it was worth it. KUDOS to Samsung for the great customer support!

Sorry to give you the bad news.

IceBlade,

Are you sure the guts can't be swapped out for those of a HLPxx74W series set?

I'm fairly certain the form factor of the light engines are the same (just the replaced the HD2 w/ an HD2+ DMD internally.) The difference would be in the the components outside of the light engine (which should be reusable.)

That being said it would have the same color wheel.

CCourtney,

Well, the info came from Steve Panosian of Samsung. I'm not sure what his motivation would be to give me erroneous info. IIRC, the HD2+ is also NOT just a "drop in replacement" with regards to the light engines. Different parts (read "smaller and cheaper to acquire and manufacture") have also made their way into most of the gut pieces of the tv's... so the form factors would definitely be off.

Obviously you don't have to take my word for it, but I'm not sure how you would ever get someone to do the work since 1.) To my knowledge it's NEVER been done and 2.) There's not a snowball's chance in hell that anyone within Samsung's phone support chain would have a clue about what's involved.

It's be a nice thought to have a continual upgrade path... unfortunately, all signs that I have personally seen point towards a new tv purchase to get better performace.

Let me know if you hear otherwise.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

I could be mistaken about the light engine (in the HLNs and the HLPxx74x) being the same form factor (if so I was mis-informed.) But the DMD (unless the pinout changed) should be a direct replacement and thus in theory one could re-use the same light engine (another way to cut cost) which is consistent w/ retaining the 6 segment color wheel (operating at the same RPM), the DMD being the same physical size and I/O levels the same, and the cabinet being reused.

I would agree to the statements:

1) To my knowledge it's NEVER been done and 2.) There's not a snowball's chance in hell that anyone within Samsung's phone support chain would have a clue about what's involved.

I doubt you'll ever see a continual upgrade path in TVs (unlike very high end Audio Equipment)

Well, I am admittedly uneducated when it comes to this topic. So I can't really answer that question.

I was helping a friend chose between the LCD/DLP sets and a Sammy..... he ended up choosing the Sammy.... but I kept seeing "Generation 3" everywhere. That's what lead to me wondering if my set was upgradeable.
As stated above, many prefer the HLNs over the generation 3 HLPs. It's definitely not worth upgrading, even if it was possible.
Interesting. Of the number of HLM and HLN owners I know here, I would say 100% wish they could have the 5685 or another comparable HD2+ chipped, 7 segment color wheeled set compared to their HLM or HLN sets. You actually know people who prefer the HD2 to the HD2+? Might I ask what the reasons are?
