I am thinking of purchasing a Samsung HLN617W but am concerned that my viewing distance is only about 8 feet. Anyone have any advice as to whether this is too close for a set this large (i.e, should I opt for a smaller model).
I started out with a 50" ,after 2 weeks it shrunk , traded it in for the hln 61 , it took about 2 or 3 weeks to let it shrink , its fine now, im about 8" away.
Go for it

It depends a lot on your source materials. My viewing distance can be at the front of screent to 24' away. If it's HD content then it is perfect at 8'. I am about ~8' from my 61" most of the times. When watch DVD, 12'-15' is best. But for just regular SD, >13'. Although, anamation(cartoon) looks god at 10'. If you are putting your new TV in a close room, 61 can be too big. what the hack, I would go with 61 regardless.
