Samsung HLP4663 Picture Upside Down, etc.

Hey guys,

Back in mid-2004 I purchased one of the first HLP4663W's to come out and I have had zero problems with this set. I'm currently running about 500 hours on the lamp. Last Friday I powered up the set to find the following:

-The image projected was shifted about 3/4" to the left

-The image (and menus, etc.) was projected upside down and mirrored

-The screen had a flicker to it, similar to a low refresh rate on a monitor

Has anyone experienced anything close to this? I'm sort of shocked that this happened so suddenly. I had watched a movie about a week prior without any problems. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Okay, I've tried unplugging it and letting it sit and still nothing. I'm really dreading having to make a service call on this.

What other choice is there?
Samsungs have an option in the SM to "flip" the image. If that option got turned on by itself then you could have larger problems.

Yeah, it did go by itself. Is it the 'V-FLIP' and 'H-FLIP' options? I can't get either of those two to do anything.
I had someone come out and take a look at the set. He screwed around with the service menu a bit and I noticed he couldn't get the V-Flip and H-Flip properties to work. They did nothing. So he told me it may be one of two things: 1) the digital board was bad; or 2) the light engine was bad. Great. When I got my set, through some oversight on my part and it being a hectic time in my life, I failed to follow through on getting the extended warranty. So here's the damage: digital board replacement: $665 plus the $115 that it cost for the visit/diag; light engine replacement: $1490 plus the $115. I told the guy for $1500+ I could almost buy a new set.

So, here's my dilemma: If it is the light engine, I'll buy a new set WITH an extended warranty. But if it's the digital board, do I eat the $700+ and hope that's the last thing that will go wrong with the set? At $115 per serice call and either $150/$250 per issue plus parts this could start adding up.

Did you, by any chance buy with an AMEX? If so, you should be protected by their Buyer's Assurance program - which doubles the factory warranty for you.

I recently had a colorwheel bearing go bad and my digital board go bad. The damage was $851 to get the TV back to functional w/ a new dig. board and CW. My claim w/ AMEX is technically still pending, but should come thru fine. HUGE benefit for AMEX members!

No :( It was Visa.
Your repair estimate sounds high to me. I don't have it in front of me, but I'm pretty sure my digi board was less than $500 installed and the CW was like $350. Trip charges here run more like $50. Granted, the guy was incompetent, and had to take the set back to the shop, but it still only cost me $50 for that part of it. $150-200 sounds really high. Could be that those of us in flyover states are benefiting from low cost of living, but 3x for TV repair sounds pretty wacky.
Even if you used a Visa card, some of them also have the extended warranty for one extra year. They all keep it pretty well buried in their "terms of agreement", but it couldn't hurt to give them a call at their customer service number and check. I have some other than AMEX cards which provide extended warranty for no cost.
