Samsung hlt5076s, two blinking lights, no picture, help please

Ok, so I was watching a DVD the other night and the screen would go black, I could hit the source button and scroll through till I got back to HDMI input and it would come back on and be fine for a while. Well today my wife said the TV made some strange noises and the screen went off, the TV shut down and I got two blinking lights. According to my manual it's a cooling fan malfunction. So I did a hard reset by leaving the power unplugged and then turning it back on and the screen will not light up and eventually I got the two lights, then after they'd been flashing a while all 3 lights would randomly flash indicating a bad lamp. Any ideas where to start? The tv is just barely over a year old and can't be anywhere near the 8,000 hours the lamp is rated for.

First step in dlp troubleshooting is pull the lamp and visually check for abnormalities. Also, lamps can fail way before 8000hrs. During start up put your ears at the back of the set, do you hear the colorwheel spin up (high pitch whine/whir)? If yes next you should hear the ballast trying to fire (click click click)?
I'll check these in the morning and report back, thanks.

Alright, just checked it. The color wheel definitely spins up, the blue glow under Samsung comes on, then after about 10 seconds there is a loud click and I can hear the color wheel kick off or slow down, I can remove the lamp cover and watch as it cycles and something to the left side of the lamp definitely is lighting up brightly for a few seconds then shutting off. The lamp light will blink then it goes through this same process around 4 times. Then I get two blinking lights which according to the manual indicate cooling fan then three blinking lights. And it will continue to blink 2 lights, then 3 lights till I pull the power cord. Visibly the bulb looks great, so should I be leaning toward cooling fan?
Inspect the large capacitor on the ballast for bulging top. It should look flat like in this picture: http://www.fixyourdlp.com/blog/pics/...7-00037A_1.jpg
sorry for the dumb question, but is this the ballast that the lamp plugs into?
yes
alright I'm gonna pull the cover again tonight and check that out. Do you know how many cooling fans my TV has? I see two listed at partstore.com but wasn't sure
Alright, that capacitor looks normal and both fans kick on immediately after pushing the power button so nothing is wrong with the fans. I'm thinking about just ordering a bulb and giving that a shot before trying anything else. Is that what you'd advise?
Yep, lamp is the cheapest and easiest thing to rule out.
thanks for all the help, I ordered a Phillips lamp and I will report back after I get it in
I have the HLT5076SX and have had the same exact issue.

I tried all the "DIY" methods I found online and nothing seemed to work.

The 3 lights still just blink and occassionally the TV tries to restart itself.

I called 1-800-SAMSUNG and after a brief conversation and a few minutes on hold I was told to order a new lamp by either a telephone number or samsungparts website.

I ordered the lamp from the website (Not too pricey, easily cheaper than some of the "extended warranties" offered at retailers) and I hope that fixes it.

I bought this TV roughly 22 months ago, and it would have taken 12 hours a day (not out of the question between wife/kids/I) to reach the 8,000 hour lamp-life.

I will report back when it arrives, hope for the best.

I have a similar problem, there is a message on the screen that says" check the fan no.1" Two blinking lights for timer and temp on front of tv. So... do I repalce a fan, or the bulb?
